Thoondu is a current-sensitive boat dive on the north-east tip of Fuvahmulah. Local operators decide whether to run it based on sea state and brief divers on current management and cleaning-station etiquette.

Profundidad reportada

5m - 30m

Nota de profundidad

The top reef starts around 5-7 m, a common working band sits around 18-30 m, and the wall keeps dropping into blue water beyond the usual recreational profile. The main thresher cleaning-station plan is generally run inside the Maldives 30 m recreational limit.

Mejor temporada

Dived year-round, with the clearest and calmest conditions usually in the dry season from December to April. March to May is especially strong for oceanic manta activity, while June to September can be windier with rougher seas and softer visibility.

Condiciones habituales

An exposed north-point reef and wall that starts shallow and rolls into blue water. Expect warm water, blue-water pelagic passes, and medium to strong current that can build into drifty, vortexy conditions.

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.

Key Hazards

Safety Notes

Treat Thoondu as a guided blue-water pelagic dive: stay tight to the briefing, keep good buoyancy over the reef edge, manage separation early, and give cleaning-station wildlife plenty of space.

Access Restrictions

Boat access only. Operators run Thoondu when weather and sea state allow and expect divers to be comfortable with blue water and current management.

Legal Notes

Thoondu sits within the Fuvahmulah Biosphere Reserve, and the Thundi area on the island's north point is a protected marine-coastal area. Follow local conservation rules and guide briefings.

Local Intel For Thoondu

Community notes to help plan your visit.

Scuba

A wall dive with an overhang and a cleaning station that can attract pelagic species.

Freedive

Not a routine casual freedive spot. The attraction is a current-sensitive outer-reef profile with pelagic action around deeper cleaning-station terrain, so it only makes sense with a boat, dedicated safety cover, and strong blue-water experience.

Snorkel

Not a good casual snorkel entry. Thoondu's main action happens off the outer reef, and the exposed north point can have strong wave and current energy even when the surface looks manageable from shore.
