Perch refers to freshwater fishes of the genus Perca, which belong to the family Percidae and the large order Perciformes. The genus name comes from the Greek πέρκη (perke) and the type species is the European perch (Perca fluviatilis). Many unrelated fishes are commonly called "perch," but true perch are members of the family Percidae. The earliest fossil remains of Perca are known from the Middle Miocene of Ukraine.
