Aperçu
Istria combines serious wreck diving with easy coastal days. Pula and Rovinj are the principal gateways to protected ships such as Baron Gautsch, while Banjol, San Giovanni, Brijuni, and near-shore reefs add caves, walls, training sites, and macro life. Porec is a practical choice for shallow reefs and family snorkeling; Rabac opens the cooler, steeper Kvarner side and excursions toward the Lina wreck. Most trips are land-based, using local day boats or house reefs rather than liveaboards.
The broad operating season runs from spring into late autumn, with May to June and September to October offering the best balance of active centers, comfortable weather, and lighter crowds. July and August bring the warmest surface water and fullest schedules, but also heat and busy beaches. Non-divers are unusually well served by Pula's Roman monuments, Rovinj's old town, Porec's UNESCO basilica, Brijuni National Park, Cape Kamenjak, and the Labin-Rabac trails.
A compact peninsula gives access to protected passenger ships, cargo vessels, military remains, and shallower wreck fragments, with Baron Gautsch as the signature advanced dive.
Pula, Rovinj, Porec, and Rabac support different coastlines while remaining practical to combine by road on one land-based trip.
Shallow coves such as Krnica and Sturag support training, while deep wrecks, limited overheads, and technical profiles create a clear path for experienced divers.
Officially described routes at Pical, Balzamake, Havajsko, Prirodno, and Girandella turn non-dive hours into genuine marine exploration rather than beach filler.
