Coral to kelp: plan one coast, then add a contrast region
Choisissez une expérience, puis trouvez le lieu adapté. Les conditions et les accès varient selon la destination.
Australia lets you choose your own adventure: coral gardens and reef walls on the Great Barrier Reef, whale sharks and manta rays on the west coast, and kelp-and-wreck diving in the temperate south. Most travelers focus on one coast, but the country is perfect for a "reef plus contrast" plan, like north Queensland plus Western Australia, or the Great Barrier Reef plus southern cold-water wildlife.
If you want the classic reef scale, start with Cairns or Port Douglas. For big-animal seasons and reef-from-shore convenience, head to Ningaloo Reef (Exmouth and Coral Bay). For dramatic temperate diving, build time around Sydney, Port Lincoln and Neptune Islands, and Tasman Peninsula (Eaglehawk Neck).

Brisbane puts multiple dive styles within easy reach: shallow wreck exploration at the Tangalooma Wrecks on Moreton Island (Mulgumpin), plus boat-only coral dives at Flinders Reef on the outer edge of Moreton Bay. The wrecks are ideal for refreshers, training, and photographers who like structure and natural light.
This corner of WA is built for divers who like variety. Busselton Jetty offers a unique, shallow dive where pylons act like a living reef, and it pairs perfectly with the Busselton Jetty Underwater Observatory for a non-diver-friendly add-on.
Julian Rocks packs multiple named dive sites into a compact reef system, so your surface interval is often a short reposition rather than a long transit. Operators such as Sundive Byron Bay (departing from Byron Bay) and Blue Bay Divers (often via Brunswick Heads) run guided two-tank trips that suit most certified divers when seas are calm.
Cairns puts dozens of quality sites within a day boat range and unlocks the famous Ribbon Reefs on liveaboard itineraries. Expect coral gardens, walls, swim-throughs, turtles, reef sharks, and seasonal mantas.
Gold Coast scuba is built around variety and convenience: shore dives in the Seaway and Broadwater, boat trips to local reefs and artificial reefs, and fast day trips to border-region highlights. Operators such as Gold Coast Dive Adventures and Kirra Dive commonly run Cook Island charters for turtles, while offshore days can target reefs like Nine Mile Reef or modern installations like Wonder Reef.
Heron Island is Great Barrier Reef diving without the commute. With many sites just minutes from the jetty and average depths around 10 m to 25 m, you can stack easy reef dives, photography sessions, and surface intervals without losing hours to long boat rides.
Jervis Bay is one of the closest true boat-diving playgrounds to Sydney and Canberra: a sheltered bay for easy training dives, plus an open-coast edge with caves, gutters and shark habitat when the sea is calm enough. The marine park lists more than 30 dive sites, from beginner-friendly reefs to advanced terrain like Slot Cave and Drum and Drumsticks.
Lord Howe Island delivers true blue-water variety: coral gardens inside a barrier-reef lagoon, plus exposed volcanic walls and offshore sea stacks when the ocean settles. Local operators like Dive Lord Howe and Pro Dive run small-boat diving to dozens of sites, and the big prize is a weather-window trip to Ball's Pyramid.
Ningaloo delivers true West Australian variety: coral gardens and reef walls minutes from shore, seasonal whale shark and humpback encounters via licensed operators, and one of Australia's most famous shore dives at Exmouth Navy Pier. Exmouth operators run day boats to the outer reef and the Muiron Islands, while Coral Bay makes it easy to add mellow reef dives between beach sessions.
Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) is Perth's closest big-ticket dive day trip: protected bays, marine sanctuary zones, and limestone reef architecture that rewards slow exploration. Expect caves, swim-throughs, ledges and coral pockets at beginner-friendly depths, with more exposed sites (West End) reserved for calmer days and experienced divers.
Port Douglas operators reach outer reefs with steep walls, swim-through bommies, and clear blue water. Expect three site stops, guided dives, and professional briefings.
South West Rocks is a boat-diving destination built around Fish Rock, a dramatic offshore pinnacle system famous for protected grey nurse sharks and the swim-through at Fish Rock Cave. Local operators like Fish Rock Dive Centre and South West Rocks Dive Centre typically run double dives, pairing the cave with shark gutters, reefs, and walls around the island.

Conditions change a lot by latitude and exposure:
Across the country, some signature sites involve current, depth, or blue-water pickups, so match the operator and boat style to your comfort level.
