Glasgow is the normal international gateway. From Glasgow Queen Street, ScotRail's West Highland Line reaches Oban in roughly 3 hours 20 minutes and finishes close to the ferry terminal and town center. Driving from Glasgow Airport is about 145 km and commonly takes around 2 hours 30 minutes before stops or traffic. Edinburgh works but adds road distance and cross-country transfer time. Oban Airport is a small regional airfield serving selected island routes, not a substitute for a main international gateway.
For Mull, CalMac operates Oban to Craignure. Vehicle space can sell out, so reserve before committing to accommodation or a dive pickup. Lochaline is reached by road through Morvern or by the short Lochaline to Fishnish ferry from Mull. Always check live service status: weather, vessel and operational disruption can affect one route without closing the entire region.

Oban Airport

A small regional airport north of Oban used for selected Hebridean island services. It is not a regular mainland hub for most international dive travelers.

Central Oban is walkable, and the rail, coach and ferry terminals sit close together. A vehicle becomes valuable for Gallanach, Ganavan, remote accommodation, Lochaline and most Mull shore plans. Roads on Mull and Morvern are often narrow or single-track: use passing places correctly, expect livestock, deer and cyclists, and budget more time than a distance estimate suggests. Public buses can support foot-passenger sightseeing, but seasonal timetables rarely align perfectly with a dive charter. Pre-book taxis for early departures. Never park in a way that blocks slips, lifeboat access, farms or passing places.
The United Kingdom applies passport, visa and Electronic Travel Authorisation rules by nationality and residence status. Most international visitors need a passport valid for the whole stay. Many non-visa nationals require an ETA before travel; at the research date it costs GBP 20 and normally permits visits of up to 6 months. British and Irish citizens and specified residents are exempt. Check the official GOV.UK visa and ETA tools immediately before booking because eligibility and fees can change. Border permission does not replace travel insurance or any airline document rules.
Contact the operator before travel about cylinders, weights, valves, gas mixes, hire sizes and fill hours. Puffin Dive Centre provides Oban-side fills, hire and repairs; Lochaline Boat Charters advertises onboard compressors. Sound of Mull boat diving generally assumes a drysuit and recent cold-water competence. Do not fly with compressed cylinders, and check the current carrier rules before moving cylinders or fuel-cell equipment by ferry.
For public transport, pack regulators, computer, mask, drysuit seals and critical personal items so a delayed main bag does not cancel the entire trip. Bring consumable spares because remote Morvern and Mull bases do not have city-scale inventory. Arrange a secure overnight drying area, label all equipment and ask whether the vessel supplies shot lines, oxygen, weights or only transport.
Pound Sterling (GBP)
Cards and contactless payments are widespread in Oban and larger Mull businesses. Carry some cash for small, remote or offline vendors, parking and service interruptions. Scottish and Bank of England notes have the same sterling value.
ATMs are easiest to find in Oban and Tobermory. Do not depend on finding a working cash machine in Lochaline, small island villages or near a remote shore entry; withdraw before leaving the main town.

Use a Type G adapter and verify that chargers are rated for 230V. Remote accommodation may have limited sockets, so bring a compliant multi-port charger rather than an overloaded travel strip.

Mobile data is reliable in central Oban but becomes patchy on Morvern, Mull's remote coasts and offshore routes. Download charts, trail notes, ferry tickets, operator contacts and accommodation directions before departure. Tell a shore contact the dive or snorkel plan and return time. VHF is the primary marine distress channel on equipped boats; a phone is not a substitute offshore. Wi-Fi is common in town lodging but can be slower or less resilient in rural properties.
Idioma
English is the everyday language. Scottish Gaelic, or Gaidhlig, is part of the region's culture and appears on some signs, ferries and place names. Dive operations normally brief in English; international groups should confirm that every diver understands tide, separation, decompression and emergency instructions rather than relying on informal translation underwater.
Seguro
Buy travel insurance that explicitly covers the planned maximum depth, drysuit use, boat diving, wreck diving and any technical or decompression profile. Recompression, helicopter or lifeboat coordination, remote transfer, missed transport, equipment loss and ferry or weather disruption should be considered. A GHIC or EHIC can support eligible state healthcare but is not a substitute for travel or diving insurance. Disclose medical conditions and confirm that the operator accepts the policy.

Pack a serviced drysuit, thermal underlayers, hood, gloves, cold-water regulators, two torches, DSMB and spool, cutting tools, backup mask and personal spares. Add waterproof outerwear, a warm hat, non-slip shore boots, dry bags and a complete change of clothes for every boat day. From late spring into early autumn include midge repellent and a head net for still evenings. Bring seasickness medication when medically appropriate, reusable water bottles, snacks and any prescription medicine in excess of the planned stay.
