Most international visitors reach central Limburg by car from a Dutch, Belgian, or German airport. Maastricht Aachen Airport is the nearest regional option, but its route network is limited and seasonal. Eindhoven is a practical low-cost gateway, Dusseldorf offers a broader international network across the German border, and Amsterdam Schiphol is the long-haul fallback.
Rail travelers can reach Roermond from major Dutch cities, then continue by rental car, taxi, or pre-arranged operator transfer. That final road leg matters because Boschmolenplas, Grote Hegge, and Zuidplas are separate shoreline locations rather than one walkable resort. A self-drive vehicle is the most efficient option for cylinders, drysuits, weights, and mixed dive and topside days.

A major German hub within practical driving range of the Dutch Limburg lakes. It can be the best choice for broader European and intercontinental connectivity.

A rental car is the practical default. Boschmolenplas is at Bosmolenweg 3, 6097 NG Heel; Grote Hegge is near Thorn; and Zuidplas is at Marina Oolderhuuske near Roermond. They are close enough for one regional base but not for carrying full dive gear between them on foot or ordinary local buses. Roermond works well as a rail, restaurant, and accommodation hub; Heel or Maasgouw can reduce the drive to Boschmolenplas.
Use a vehicle with a flat, protected cargo area, waterproof tubs, and enough ventilation for wet equipment. Do not leave visible cameras or regulators in a parked car. Confirm parking, barrier access, and any trailer charge with the site. Cycling is excellent for topside exploration but not a realistic substitute for transporting cylinders and weights.
The Netherlands is in the Schengen Area. EU, EEA, and Swiss travelers normally use a valid passport or national identity card. Other nationalities may need a short-stay visa, and visa-exempt visitors are generally limited to 90 days in any 180-day Schengen period. Requirements depend on nationality, residence, purpose, and recent border-system changes.
Use the official Netherlands Worldwide visa checker shortly before booking and again before departure. Travelers who require a Schengen visa should follow the official passport checklist, including issue-date, blank-page, and post-departure validity rules. Do not rely on an old ETIAS or border-control article because implementation status can change.
Boschmolenplas provides compressed air up to 300 bar, rental equipment, and a dive shop. Its full rental set is for on-site use only, requires identification and a cash deposit, and should be reserved. This makes local rental easier than flying with cylinders or heavy weights. Confirm valve compatibility, working pressure, fill hours, gas availability, and inspection requirements before bringing a personal cylinder.
Airline passengers should rent cylinders and weights locally. Any cylinder carried by air must comply with the airline's current dangerous-goods rules and normally needs the valve removed for inspection, which rarely makes sense for a short trip. Pack regulators, computers, lights, exposure layers, certification cards, and critical prescription items in hand luggage where permitted. Recharge and test lights before each cold, low-light dive.
Euro (EUR)
Cards are widely useful for accommodation, restaurants, fuel, and the Boschmolenplas shop, fills, rental, and catering. Carry cash because the Boschmolenplas entrance fee is explicitly cash-only and smaller parking or local services may not match a visitor's preferred card.
Use bank ATMs in Roermond, Heel, or another town before driving to a shoreline site. Do not assume a dive entrance or marina has an ATM. Decline optional dynamic currency conversion when your home card offers a better rate, and keep a second payment method separate from the first.

Bring a plug adapter if needed and confirm that chargers are rated for 230V. Use only dry, protected outlets for lights, heated-garment batteries, cameras, and scooters, and follow the battery maker's charging guidance.
Kommunikation
Save operator numbers, booking confirmations, gate instructions, and offline maps before leaving town. Shoreline reception can be less dependable than service in Roermond or Heel, and a phone is not a substitute for a site briefing or agreed emergency procedure. Tell companions which lake and access point you are using because similar lake names and multiple marinas can confuse responders. For an emergency call 112; for dive-medicine coordination after local emergency services, use DAN Europe.
Sprache
Dutch is the local language. English is widely useful in tourism and diving, and German is common in this border region. Boschmolenplas publishes house-rule material in multiple languages, but safety briefings and certification limits must still be understood precisely. Ask for clarification rather than agreeing to an instruction you do not understand, and learn the written lake name and street address for emergency calls.
Versicherung
Carry travel insurance that explicitly covers cold-water scuba or freediving to the planned depth, including wreck or technical activity where relevant, plus emergency transport, hyperbaric treatment, and repatriation. European visitors with a valid EHIC should still buy insurance because the card is not a substitute for rescue, private treatment, or repatriation cover. Check exclusions for solo activity, which is prohibited at Boschmolenplas anyway, and for drysuit, DPV, rebreather, or overhead use. Save the insurer and DAN contact details offline.
