East Sardinia (Cala Gonone and the Gulf of Orosei)

A 5mm full suit is a useful main-season starting point for many scuba divers, but personal cold tolerance, dive length, repetition, and month matter. Published destination guidance places water near 17°C in May and around 28°C in August and September. Add a hood or thermal vest for May, October, deeper profiles, and multiple boat dives. Freedivers may choose different thickness and flexibility for streamlining and breath-hold comfort. Confirm current water temperature and rental inventory with the operator, and never trade adequate insulation for lower luggage weight.

Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is the most convenient gateway, about 106 km by road from Cala Gonone. A rental car or pre-booked private transfer usually takes around 1 hour 30 minutes in normal conditions and is the simplest choice with dive bags. Public transport is possible but can require timetable-dependent bus connections through Nuoro, Siniscola, or Dorgali, so it may not align with an early boat. Reserve the car size and after-hours collection procedure in advance. Avoid scheduling a nonrefundable dive immediately after landing in case baggage or road delays occur.

It depends on the activity. The public south branch of Grotta del Bue Marino is a guided pedestrian show-cave visit reached by a separate boat transfer, so no scuba certification is needed. Underwater cave penetration is entirely different and requires appropriate cave training, recent overhead experience, continuous guideline, redundant breathing gas, redundant lights, and a specialist operator. Recreational Open Water or Advanced Open Water certification does not authorize cave diving. Ask the operator to state whether a proposed route remains in open water, enters a cavern zone, or is a true cave dive, then follow the strictest applicable qualification boundary.

Lungomare Beach is the clearest documented town-shore option, with rocky habitat from the surface to roughly 8 m. Go early on a calm morning before swimmer numbers, parking pressure, and boat movement increase. Cala Cartoe is another locally promoted family beach with easier shallow water, though it requires transport and same-day condition checks. Wear suitable footwear for rock, use flotation when needed, and keep a controlled exit in sight. Clear blue water does not remove surge, slippery entries, sea urchins, or vessel-lane hazards.

Five to seven nights is a strong first trip. Divers can schedule three or four water days, leaving one flexible day for weather-driven site changes and at least one full surface interval for Bue Marino, Dorgali archaeology, or a Supramonte outing. A shorter three-night stay is vulnerable to one canceled boat and offers little room to progress from a checkout to advanced wrecks. Mixed groups benefit from alternating sea and land days. Add nights for technical training, a regulated Cala Goloritze hike, or an island-wide route using Cagliari or Alghero airports.

Stay in Cala Gonone for a water-first trip: the harbor, dive centers, waterfront, excursion boats, and shallow town shore are close together. Stay in Dorgali for a quieter inland base with easier access to archaeology, food, road connections, and some trailheads. The towns are close enough to combine by car, but the daily descent, parking, gear movement, and early boat timing make the choice operationally meaningful. Families or mixed groups may prefer a split stay only on a longer trip. In July and August, compare parking and cancellation terms before choosing on price alone.

Budget for Dorgali's seasonal accommodation tax from April 1 through October 31, with the exact rate depending on lodging category and exemptions. The guided Bue Marino cave currently publishes full admission of EUR 10 in April, May, and October and EUR 12 from June through September; the boat transfer is separate. Cala Goloritze lists a EUR 7 regulated-access fee for 2026. No destination-wide scuba marine-park tag was identified in the reviewed sources, but operator, guide, gas, equipment, harbor, or site-specific charges can still apply. Reconfirm every rate before travel.

Non-divers can take a cove cruise, visit the guided Bue Marino show cave, explore the Museo Archeologico di Dorgali, see Ispinigoli, or choose an aquarium and waterfront day. Active travelers can book Gorroppu, Tiscali, or Cala Goloritze, but those routes require the right fitness, footwear, heat plan, and often a guide or reservation. June and September offer the easiest balance for sea and land activities. In July and August, start hikes early and reserve boats, controlled-access beaches, parking, and popular meals. Keep one flexible attraction for any weather-canceled sea day.

Main-season visibility can exceed 20 m, but no single figure applies to every cove, depth, or weather pattern. Wind, swell, plankton, rain, boat traffic, and bottom contact can reduce clarity locally. Some published routes are sheltered rocky dives, while Osalla Bank is described as a drift and other sites can have exposed approaches or surge. Ask for the actual site briefing rather than treating Mediterranean blue water as proof of calm conditions. Maintain neutral buoyancy over sand and Posidonia, keep the group close, and be ready for a surface marker buoy ascent.

Use a dedicated school such as Mare Nostrum Freedive and reserve before arrival. Its published season runs April through October, with course progressions reaching 12 m, 24 m, and 30 m according to level. Disclose your certification, recent depth practice, equalization limits, medications, and relevant medical history, then complete any required medical form. Never train alone or hyperventilate. A safe session needs a visible buoy, line, lanyard, one-up-one-down buddy supervision, recovery breathing, and an instructor-selected location that accounts for wind, boats, exits, and water temperature.

Sardinia follows Italy and Schengen entry rules. EU, EEA, and Swiss travelers should carry a valid national identity card or passport as applicable. Other nationalities must verify visa and passport requirements; visa-exempt short stays are generally limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. The Entry/Exit System was fully operational from April 10, 2026 for relevant non-EU short-stay border crossings.
