Lava reefs, archaeological dives and two marine parks under Etna's skyline
Eastern Sicily combines ordinary Mediterranean diving risk with two formal MPA systems. Use an insured, appropriately qualified operator, accept weather-led site changes and keep park documents for the exact activity. Protect archaeological material, Posidonia, coralligenous growth and cave surfaces through precise buoyancy and no-contact behavior.
Carry a computer and SMB, remain close to the guide or authorized surface marker, and plan conservatively for current, surge, boat traffic and cooler depth layers. Never enter an overhead route beyond certification. Plemmirio cave dives require the relevant cave qualification or accepted equivalent; Zone A access is controlled. Freedivers must never train alone and must use competent direct supervision. Follow current agency and operator guidance for flying or ascending after diving. An Etna excursion can involve meaningful elevation, so schedule it only after the operator confirms the interval for the actual dive profile.

Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania is a major regional referral point; hyperbaric availability, accepting status and transport routing must be confirmed during the emergency rather than assumed from an old directory. Administer oxygen when trained and available, keep the diver hydrated if conscious and safe to drink, preserve computer data and do not delay emergency activation while seeking a preferred chamber.
Boat traffic and exposed surfacing
Carry and deploy an SMB when instructed, surface close to the dive flag or authorized mooring and listen for propellers. Snorkelers and freedivers should use high-visibility support and avoid crossing boat lanes.
Current, surge and rapid site swaps
Headlands, pinnacles and exposed lava points can change character with wind and current. Accept the operator's substitute site rather than pushing a fixed itinerary.
Overhead environments
A lit grotto is not permission to enter every cave. Stay within certification, gas, light, guideline and direct-surface limits specified by the guide and MPA rules.
Rocky entries and sea urchins
Lava, cobbles and limestone shelves can be slippery, sharp or surge-washed. Use secure footwear, keep hands off living surfaces and choose a different access point when exit conditions deteriorate.
The Cyclops Islands and Plemmirio MPAs regulate zones, hours, moorings, operators and visitor conduct. Use authorized buoys instead of anchoring, maintain neutral buoyancy, secure gauges and lights, and stay off Posidonia, rock growth and archaeological remains. Do not collect organisms or objects, feed wildlife, chase animals or use propulsion devices where prohibited. In Cyclops Islands authorized diving, remain within the official distance of the designated mooring, SMB or float and follow the published group limits. At Plemmirio, use only the itinerary and authorization assigned for that dive.
