Deep South Maldives diving: big channels, quieter reefs, and equator-side adventure
Gaafu's diving is remote and current-driven. The best safety strategy is conservative planning: dive within your training, treat channel dives with respect, and keep reliable surface signaling. Support infrastructure exists in the Maldives, but evacuation from the Deep South takes time, so insurance and prevention matter.
Gaafu is remote, so serious incidents may require transfer back toward Male depending on conditions. The Ministry of Tourism publishes a list of hyperbaric chambers. Carry dive accident insurance that covers chamber treatment and evacuation, and confirm your operator's emergency action plan.
Strong currents and downcurrents in passes
Gaafu channel dives can run hard and change quickly. Stay close to the guide, keep a conservative profile, and carry an SMB for drift pickups.
Surface chop and long pickups
Outer-reef and channel dives can end with long surface drifts. Make sure your SMB is reliable, and keep exposure protection for wind chill on the surface.
Remote logistics
Medical evacuation and hyperbaric treatment usually involve transfers back toward Male. Dive insurance and a conservative approach matter more here than in the central atolls.
Das solltest du nicht tun
Geh nicht ins Wasser, wenn strong currents and downcurrents in passes. Prüfe lokale Briefings, bevor du dich festlegst.
