Kaikoura scuba is a rugged, cold-water contrast to the tropical South Pacific. You dive kelp forests, boulder gardens, and pinnacles in water that can sit around 9°C in winter and rarely rises above about 18°C in summer. The payoff is a real chance of seal fly-bys and a constant sense of the deep ocean nearby, thanks to the Kaikoura Canyon. Local operations are small and conditions matter: Dave's Diving is the town's dedicated scuba center and can steer you toward the safest site for the day.

A rugged pinnacle with dens that can hold crayfish and coastal fish life.

A bay site with rocky, kelp-covered terrain and plenty of dens.
A classic peninsula shore dive with kelp, swim-throughs, and the possibility of curious fur seals.
