If you are traveling internationally, arrange the examination before the trip and make sure the document remains valid for the dates you plan to dive.

The operator identifies Entries 0 and 1 as suitable for training because platforms are installed in shallow water, and other shallow areas support controlled skill work. Hemmoor becomes substantially more demanding when routes move toward steep walls, deeper wrecks or the Ruttler. New visitors should start with a simple route, maintain excellent buoyancy above fine sediment and consider a local guide or experienced Hemmoor buddy. Kreidesee should not be planned as a casual snorkeling or swimming lake. Official Hemmoor tourism information explicitly describes it as not being a public swimming lake, and the shore infrastructure is organized around controlled scuba, apnea, fishing and accommodation access. That means a traveler should not assume that paying a visitor fee permits ordinary beach snorkeling. If you have a specific surface-water activity in mind, ask Tauchbasis Kreidesee before entering the water. Non-divers who want a swimming day should instead use an authorized local bathing facility or lake where public swimming is explicitly permitted.

Bring a computer, hood, gloves, compass and lights. The base rents many equipment categories but does not rent wetsuits, semi-dry suits or drysuits, so arrange exposure protection before traveling.
Hemmoor is served by the regional rail corridor between Hamburg, Stade and Cuxhaven, so a car-free trip is possible. From Hamburg Airport, take the S1 into Hamburg and connect to regional rail toward Hemmoor. The limitation is the final dive logistics: cold-water gear, cylinders and repeated movement between accommodation and entries are much easier with a vehicle. If traveling by train, consider staying directly at or very near the lake and renting cylinders or other heavy equipment locally. Confirm current rail schedules before travel because engineering work and timetable changes can affect the regional route.
Register before diving, carry valid certification, logbook and medical clearance, and follow the certification-linked depth limits. Solo diving is prohibited. The 2026 rules require two separately closable breathing systems, a mandatory 3-minute safety stop at 3 m, buddy separation of no more than 3 m and at least 40 bar residual pressure.
