Limestone caverns, volcanic walls, and Lampione sharks at Europe's southern edge
The Pelagie Islands combine remote-water logistics with meaningful local protection. Use an authorized operator, accept weather cancellations, remain within certification, and carry dive-specific insurance that covers hyperbaric treatment and evacuation. Lampedusa has an emergency point and a seasonal hyperbaric chamber, but complex care or off-season diving emergencies may require transfer to Sicily.
Conservation rules are enforceable, not optional etiquette. Zone A is closed to recreational diving and apnea. In Zones B and C, nonresident divers use authorized centers. Do not touch, feed, collect, damage, anchor on sensitive habitat, or disturb nesting turtles. Report an emergency first, then preserve location, profile, gas, and symptom information for responders.
Check certification, recency, medical fitness, gas plan, oxygen, communications, diver recall, and lost-diver procedure with the operator. Remote Lampione and Linosa outings need conservative turn pressures because weather and distance reduce options. Carry a delayed surface marker buoy, spool, audible signal, and computer; keep exposure protection on during long surface transits.
Make slow ascents, complete safety stops, hydrate, and avoid alcohol before diving. DAN Europe considers 24 hours the prudent preflight interval; it is especially sensible after repetitive days, decompression, or technical profiles. Any post-dive neurological, breathing, balance, skin, or unusual fatigue symptom warrants oxygen, emergency assessment, and direct consultation with DAN or local emergency services.
Submerged caves and overhead fissures require specific training and are additionally regulated by the marine protected area. Never enter because a guide, light, or wide opening makes the route appear easy.
Lampedusa's Poliambulatorio at Contrada Grecale includes a 24-hour emergency point and several diagnostic and specialist services. The ASP Palermo health authority states that the island hyperbaric chamber normally operates each year from May 1 through September 15. Chamber presence does not guarantee immediate readiness, staffing, or suitability for every case, so the operator should verify current status.
Outside that seasonal window, or for complex trauma and critical illness, transfer to Sicily may be necessary by aircraft or vessel. Carry an EHIC if eligible, but do not rely on it as a substitute for travel and diving insurance. Keep medication in original packaging and bring enough for weather delays.
Open-water weather controls the itinerary
Wind and swell can cancel Lampione, Linosa, ferry, and boat-circuit plans at short notice. Never pressure a skipper or dive center to run an exposed route.
Current and rapid depth
Lampione, Punta Cappellone, and Linosa walls can combine current with deep blue water. Use a guide, maintain team contact, carry a surface marker, and stay inside certification and gas limits.
Zone and authorization violations
Recreational diving and apnea are prohibited in Zone A. Nonresident divers in Zones B and C must use an authorized center, and anchoring is limited to permitted locations.
Caves are regulated overhead environments
Do not treat a submerged cave or deep fissure as a casual swim-through. The marine protected area regulation imposes special equipment and exhaust-control conditions, and normal cavern or cave training requirements still apply.
The protected area safeguards Posidonia seagrass, coralligenous habitat, submerged caves, coastal reef, cetaceans, turtles, and pelagic routes around Lampedusa, Linosa, and Lampione.
