Complete a check dive before current-exposed or deep objectives. Carry a DSMB and audible signal, stay within the local diver-signal procedure, and discuss lost-buddy and lost-boat protocols. Do not exceed training for Secca del Pisello, cave passages, or wreck penetration. Maintain conservative gas reserves where current could separate the group from the ascent point. Separate freediving and scuba according to agency guidance. After repetitive or multiday scuba, a conservative minimum of 24 hours before flying is prudent unless your training agency or dive physician requires longer. Any neurological, breathing, balance, severe pain, or unusual fatigue symptom after diving deserves urgent evaluation rather than self-diagnosis.
Call 112 for urgent medical response and identify the incident as diving-related. The Vito Fazzi Hospital in Lecce has a hyperbaric medicine center that officially reopened in 2025, but chamber acceptance, staffing, and treatment pathway must be coordinated through emergency services or a diving-medicine network. Otranto and Leuca are not next door to Lecce, so oxygen delivery, evacuation planning, and early notification matter. Strong current at exposed walls and secche
Current can be significant at La Palombara, Taglio delle Orte, Punta Meliso, and especially Secca del Pisello. Follow the guide, streamline equipment, preserve gas for ascent, and be ready for a blue-water DSMB pickup.
Boat traffic and harbor approaches
Dive boats, fishing craft, cave cruises, and recreational traffic share popular water. Use the required diver signal, stay with the planned group, and deploy a DSMB only as briefed.
Untrained cave or wreck penetration
Wide illuminated openings can create false confidence. Do not pass a daylight exit, enter restrictions, or penetrate the Tevfik Kaptan I without suitable overhead or wreck training, equipment, gas planning, and guide authorization.
Wind-driven cancellations and site swaps
The peninsula's exposure means a forecast can change the launch side, route, or entire day. Keep plans flexible and do not pressure a skipper to run an exposed site.
The regional park protects a long coastal landscape of cliffs, ravines, scrub, rural architecture, and sensitive habitats. Underwater, use stable buoyancy, avoid contact with gorgonians and cave growth, never feed or chase wildlife, and do not collect shells, anchors, amphora fragments, or wreck material. Follow mooring and anchoring rules and keep fins off the bottom in grottoes. Respect temporary turtle-nesting barriers, dark-sky requests, bathing zones, and Coast Guard notices. Use refillable water containers, secure loose plastic on boats, and choose operators that brief artifact protection and route around sensitive seabed.
