Most international itineraries use Palermo Airport (PMO), while Trapani Airport (TPS) can be much more convenient when its route network matches the travel dates. San Vito Lo Capo has no rail station, so continue by rental car, scheduled bus where practical, private transfer, or taxi.
For the Egadi Islands, travel first to Trapani port. Liberty Lines hydrofoils form the main fast-passenger network to Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo, with frequencies and stopping patterns changing by season and sea conditions. Conventional ferries operate on selected sailings and are the relevant path for eligible vehicles or larger freight, but taking a car to the islands is usually unnecessary and may be seasonally restricted.
Do not combine an exposed island crossing with a tight flight connection. After Marettimo, place the last night in Trapani or near the departure airport whenever the flight is early or nonrefundable.

The nearest practical airport to Trapani port and often the fastest gateway to the Egadi ferries. The route network is smaller and more seasonal than Palermo's.

The broader gateway for international and domestic connections. It is well placed for San Vito Lo Capo and workable for Trapani port, but both require a road transfer.

A rental car is the most flexible mainland option for San Vito Lo Capo, Scopello, Zingaro entrances, and Trapani province. Parking and restricted historic centers require attention. On Favignana, bicycles, e-bikes, scooters, taxis, and local shuttles are more useful than a private car. Levanzo and Marettimo are mainly walking destinations with small local boat services. Pre-book airport transfers around early flights, late arrivals, or festival dates.
Italy is in the Schengen Area. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens normally travel under free-movement rules with a valid identity document. Other travelers must check the Italian and European Commission tools for nationality-specific visa, passport-validity, insurance, and border-system requirements. Schengen visa applicants are generally asked for a passport valid beyond the planned stay and compliant travel medical insurance. Digital border and travel-authorization systems can change, so verify the live requirement before ticketing and again before departure. This destination adds no separate immigration form for the Egadi Islands.
Confirm airline sports-baggage rules before selecting PMO or TPS, since a cheaper route can become expensive with dive gear. Local centers generally provide standard recreational rental equipment and cylinders, but technical gases, twinsets, stages, large-size exposure suits, freedive lines, and specialized camera support need advance confirmation. Hydrofoils have finite baggage space and wet gear must be packed cleanly. Use a ventilated mesh bag for daily boats, a sealed dry bag for electronics, and allow equipment to dry before the flight. Never fly until the appropriate no-fly interval after diving has passed.

Cards are common at hotels, dive centers, restaurants, and major rentals, but small bars, taxis, kiosks, and island services may prefer cash or have temporary terminal problems. Confirm whether accommodation tax must be paid separately.
ATMs are easiest to find in Trapani, San Vito Lo Capo, and Favignana. Availability is thinner on Levanzo and Marettimo, and machines can run low or fail during peak periods, so withdraw before the smaller islands.

Carry a Type C or L-compatible adapter and confirm that chargers are dual voltage. Older properties can have limited sockets, so a compact non-surge multiport charger is useful.

Italy's major mobile networks cover the main towns, and EU roaming generally applies to eligible EU plans. Signal can weaken on Marettimo's west coast, inside caves, on remote Zingaro sections, and offshore. Download ferry tickets, insurance documents, maps, operator contacts, and accommodation directions before departure. A local SIM or eSIM is practical for non-EU visitors, but it should not be treated as offshore emergency equipment.
Sprache
Italian is the working language, with Sicilian widely heard locally. Tourism and dive staff often speak functional English, but smaller transport, medical, and family-run services may not. Learn basic Italian for sea conditions, allergies, equipment sizes, pickup points, and emergencies, and keep critical medical information written in Italian.
Versicherung
Use a policy that explicitly covers scuba or freediving to the planned depth and qualification, hyperbaric treatment, medical evacuation, search and rescue, and repatriation. Standard travel policies may exclude technical diving, overhead environments, solo activity, or incidents outside certification limits. Add trip-interruption protection for ferry cancellation and missed connections, and carry policy details offline.
Packliste
For diving, bring a 3mm to 5mm suit according to season and cold tolerance, plus a hood or vest for spring and autumn. Pack a delayed surface marker buoy, computer, compact light, certification cards, water shoes, and spares that small-island shops may not stock. For land days, add closed-toe hiking shoes, high-capacity sun protection, a windproof ferry layer, dry bag, reusable water bottle, and a small amount of cash. Keep prescription medicine and one change of clothes in cabin baggage.
