Cold-water Baltic discovery from Fehmarn wrecks to Kiel reefs and Luebeck Bay shallows
The primary risks are cold exposure, wind and chop, variable visibility, current, surface traffic, slippery entries, and weather-driven plan changes. More unusual but important hazards include historic marine munitions and local access restrictions. Use trained buddies, appropriate certification, a visible surface marker, conservative gas and thermal limits, and local site knowledge. Call 112 for life-threatening emergencies and state clearly that a diving incident is suspected.
Provide first aid and high-concentration oxygen when trained and available, call 112, describe the dive profile and symptoms, and follow emergency coordination. Do not descend again to treat symptoms and do not self-drive to a chamber.
Kiel and Luebeck have major hospitals and emergency medical services. The German Navy's Naval Institute of Maritime Medicine in Kronshagen near Kiel maintains diving-medicine and hyperbaric capability, including civilian underwater-accident treatment through coordinated emergency pathways. Access is not a walk-in dive service. Call 112 and let emergency physicians coordinate oxygen, transport, specialist consultation, and hyperbaric referral. DAN Europe can provide parallel dive-medical assistance. Remote Fehmarn shore sites make accurate location sharing, a charged phone, and a shore contact particularly important.
Wind can invalidate the planned coast
Chop, entry safety, visibility, and boat departures can change rapidly. Review current marine weather and the previous day's wind, then accept a leeward site swap.
Fehmarnsund and offshore wreck currents
The bridge area and selected offshore wrecks can carry strong current. These are not default beginner dives and require local timing, a clear separation plan, and suitable experience.
Luebeck Bay undertow and beach flags
Strong easterly and northeasterly winds can produce dangerous localized undertow between Scharbeutz and Timmendorfer Strand. A red DLRG flag means no swimming; yellow restricts children and weak swimmers.
Cold water and reduced visibility
Thermal stress, task loading, and short visual range can compound quickly. Use appropriate exposure protection, conservative gas and time limits, a compass, and a buddy plan that works without constant visual contact.
The marine reserve west of Fehmarn protects stone reefs, boulder fields, mussel beds, sandbanks, seagrass, algae communities, fish nursery areas, sea birds, and harbor porpoises. Diving and swimming are allowed in the new offshore reserve, but plants, animals, and habitats must not be destroyed, removed, or disturbed. Other local no-dive or restricted zones remain separate and must be honored.
