Cold, clear quarry diving through Germany's submerged industrial history
Hemmoor is a controlled cold-water site with explicit local rules. Medical fitness evidence, buddy diving and redundant cold-water breathing systems are central requirements.
The February 2026 rules set depth limits including 25 m for Bronze/OWD/AOWD or equivalent, 40 m for qualifying Rescue/Silver-level divers, and 45 m for higher qualified air divers, with separate technical provisions. A 3-minute safety stop at 3 m is mandatory, buddy separation must not exceed 3 m, and 40 bar residual pressure is specified. Solo diving is prohibited. Diving is allowed 06:00 to 23:00.
Emergency telephones are positioned at Entries E0, E3 and E5. In a serious incident call 112 first and notify the dive base during opening hours. DAN Europe provides 24/7 diving emergency consultation. Hyperbaric destination should be coordinated by emergency medical services using the current GTUeM chamber network.
Cold water
Even in summer, deeper water remains cold.
Steep drop-offs
Some entries transition quickly to deep quarry walls.
Fine sediment
Poor buoyancy can reduce visibility quickly.
Maintain buoyancy above chalk sediment and vegetation, avoid entering unstable structures, respect exclusion zones and do not handle artificial attractions.
