Protected Kornati walls, Adriatic wrecks, and four flexible Dalmatian bases

June and September are the strongest scuba months because operators are active, sea temperatures are commonly around 22°C to 23°C, and crowds are lower than in peak summer. July and August are warmest, often around 24°C to 25°C at the surface, but boats, roads, marinas, and accommodation fill quickly. May and October can work for flexible divers with thicker exposure protection. From November through April, confirm a specific operator before booking because schedules are limited and exposed sites face more weather cancellations.
Book an organized group with an entity authorized and contracted by Kornati National Park. Independent scuba is prohibited. Diving is limited to nine approved zones: Opat - Tanka Prisliga, Samograd, Okljuc, Mala Panitula, Vela Panitula, Rasip, Kasela, Mana, and Borovnik. The park maximum is 40 m, and night diving is prohibited from 19:00 to 07:00. Do not touch, remove, disturb, or damage organisms or objects. Ask the operator whether the vessel ticket and per-diver organized-visit charge are included in the quoted price.
Choose Murter or Betina for repeated Kornati day boats and easy beach fallbacks. Choose Primosten for a compact coastal stay with Pongo Bay, local walls, old-town evenings, and good road access. Choose Rogoznica for freediving, marina services, Stuka and coastal wall logistics, plus Dragon's Eye. Choose Sibenik for the deepest heritage and restaurant choice, passenger ferries to inhabited islands, and easy non-diver days. A rental car makes any one base workable, but a two-base split between Murter and Primosten or Rogoznica is the most efficient for dive variety.
Yes, but the destination must be planned selectively. Pongo Bay is a sheltered training and checkout site, and Kukuljari or the easier side of Bacvica can provide controlled upper profiles when the operator agrees. Many headline sites are not beginner dives. Dome includes overhead awareness, Samograd is a deeper wall, Alain's Cliff and Plic Grmeni can carry current and exposure, and Francesca di Rimini is a deep advanced wreck. Beginners should book a center that separates training goals from advanced boat objectives and should accept a weather-based site choice.
Many divers use a 5mm suit in July and August, when surface water often reaches about 24°C to 25°C. A 7mm suit, hood, or additional thermal layer is prudent in May, June, September, and October, and for repetitive or deeper dives where thermoclines can be much colder than the harbor surface. Winter water can approach about 10°C. Personal cold tolerance varies, so ask the operator for recent temperature profiles at depth, not only a surface reading, and select exposure protection for the longest planned dive.
Kornati National Park states that no license is required for snorkeling. That does not remove other rules: strict-protection zones are closed, every visitor must be covered by a valid vessel ticket, and no one may touch, collect, feed, chase, or damage marine life. Competition-style or buoyed line freediving is not expressly defined on the park's snorkeling page. Confirm any formal depth-training session with the park or an authorized operator. Use a visible float, stay in the skipper's designated area, and avoid active scuba zones and boat approaches.
Book an authorized dive operator for scuba or a licensed excursion for sightseeing and snorkeling. Murter and Betina are the most direct gateways, while boats also depart from Primosten, Rogoznica, Sibenik-area ports, and farther north. Kornati's core park is not served like a normal inhabited island by a scheduled passenger ferry. Jadrolinija ferries from Sibenik reach Zlarin, Prvic, Kaprije, and Zirje, but they do not replace a park dive boat. Confirm whether the vessel ticket, diver fee, food, shade, and swim stops are included.
Stuka is the most approachable signature wreck for qualified advanced divers. The protected Ju 87 lies upright around 25 m to 27 m and is normally visited with a local operator. Francesca di Rimini is a different category: its mast is near 28 m, while the main structure is reported around 38 m to 50 m, with cold, darkness, instability, and ammunition hazards. Shallow aircraft remains at Airplane in Movar Cove suit a lighter profile. Every protected wreck requires operator confirmation and no artifact handling.
Use Sibenik for the Cathedral of St James, fortresses, St Anthony Channel, historic lanes, and island ferries. Zlarin adds the Coral Centre and an easy waterfront day. Primosten combines its peninsula old town, beaches, and Bucavac vineyards. Rogoznica offers Dragon's Eye and Marina Frapa, while Murter has a broad beach circuit. Krka National Park is the strongest inland full-day excursion. In June, the International Children's Festival adds family programming. Non-divers can also join some dive boats as registered visitors, but confirm space, park charges, shade, ladder access, and swim opportunities.
Split Airport is usually best for Rogoznica, Primosten, Sibenik, and the southern approach to Murter. Approximate road distances range from 35 km to Rogoznica to about 75 km to Murter. Zadar Airport is competitive for Murter at roughly 65 km and Sibenik around 80 km, but it is farther from Primosten and Rogoznica. Compare flight schedule, dive-bag allowance, and total transfer. A pre-booked transfer is simplest for one base; a rental car is best for split bases and weather-day touring.
The official 2026 price list shows an organized scuba visit at EUR 20 per diver for one day or EUR 40 per diver for three days. A non-diving visitor accompanying the organized group is listed at EUR 7. The dive boat also needs park vessel admission, whose price varies by vessel size, season, duration, and purchase point. For the smallest vessel band, one-day advance rates begin at EUR 25 in lower-season months and EUR 45 from June through September. Ask the operator which charges are bundled before comparing dive prices.
Alert the skipper and call 112 for a life-threatening event. Start oxygen first aid if trained and equipped, support airway and breathing, record the dive profile, and follow the vessel's evacuation plan. Do not delay emergency assessment while independently searching for a chamber. DAN Europe advises using local emergency services or the nearest hospital first, then calling its 24-hour hotline at +39 06 4211 5685 for diving-medicine and evacuation support. Because island evacuation can be slow, choose an operator with adequate oxygen, working communications, position reporting, and a rehearsed emergency procedure.
