Most dive groups arrive by road via the A1, then branch to Eyemouth, Coldingham or St Abbs. Berwick-upon-Tweed is the most useful mainline rail gateway, roughly 23 km from St Abbs, with onward taxi or limited bus connections. Reston station is closer to St Abb's Head at roughly 10 km, but its service pattern and last-mile options require careful checking.
Edinburgh Airport is the broadest international gateway; Newcastle International is a credible alternative, especially for travellers connecting through Amsterdam, Paris, London, Dublin or Dubai. Public transport from either airport needs multiple legs. Dive teams with cylinders, weights or drysuit bags normally save substantial friction by hiring a car, arranging a club vehicle or pre-booking a transfer sized for equipment.

An alternative international gateway south of the destination, with direct and one-stop access through major European and long-haul hubs.

A car or club van is the practical default. It links accommodation, St Abbs Harbour, Eyemouth Harbour, Coldingham Bay, gas fills and weather-driven alternative sites without depending on sparse rural timetables. Local buses connect Berwick-upon-Tweed, Eyemouth, Coldingham and St Abbs in some schedules, but routes and operating days change. Pre-book taxis for early boats or one-way coastal walks, and state that you have wet or bulky equipment.
Domestic UK travellers do not cross an international border. Overseas visitors need a valid passport and must use the current GOV.UK checker to determine whether they need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Most visa-exempt visitors from Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia and several other countries usually need an ETA; British and Irish citizens and people with qualifying UK immigration permission are among the exemptions.
At the research date an ETA costs GBP 20 and can support tourism visits of up to 6 months, but it does not guarantee admission. Each traveller, including children, needs the appropriate permission. Entry rules and fees can change, so verify GOV.UK immediately before booking and again before departure.
Eyemouth is the most useful equipment hub. Marine Quest advertises an on-site drying room and air, nitrox and trimix mixing; St Abbs Charters advertises air fills, hire equipment and servicing. Exact gases, oxygen-clean requirements, helium stock, cylinder sizes and turnaround times must be confirmed before travel.
Do not fly with cylinders unless the airline and valve-removal rules are satisfied. Pre-book rental cylinders and weights instead, then carry personal exposure protection, regulators, computer, mask, DSMB, spool, torch and cutting tool. Ask accommodation providers about wet-kit rules and secure drying. Airline sports-baggage limits vary by carrier, so obtain written confirmation for dive bags and protect drysuit seals in hand luggage where permitted.
Pound Sterling (GBP)
Cards and contactless payment are normal in Eyemouth and at many accommodation or food businesses. Carry a small cash reserve for parking, small cafes, donations or connectivity failures, and confirm payment terms for charters and gas before arrival.
Plan withdrawals in Eyemouth, Berwick-upon-Tweed or another larger town. Do not assume that St Abbs village has a convenient cash machine, especially outside peak visitor hours.

Bring a UK Type G adapter and make sure chargers are rated for 230V. A multi-port charger is useful in older guesthouses where sockets near drying areas may be limited; never charge equipment in a wet space.

Mobile data is available around the main settlements and the National Trust lists 3G/4G coverage at St Abb's Head, but cliffs, coves and sea fog can complicate reception and orientation. Download maps, tide tables, booking details and emergency numbers offline. Boat teams should rely on marine VHF and the skipper's communications plan rather than a phone alone.
Idioma
English is the working language for operators, transport and emergency services. Local Scottish and Borders accents may be unfamiliar to some visitors, so repeat tide times, gas mixes and meeting points back during safety-critical briefings.
Seguro
Carry travel insurance that explicitly covers the planned scuba, freedive or open-water activity, including depth, technical or decompression profiles, equipment, weather cancellation, search and rescue, medical transfer and hyperbaric treatment. A GHIC or EHIC can help eligible visitors access state healthcare but is not a substitute for specialist travel and diving cover.
