Most visitors gateway through Perth, then either fly to Shark Bay Airport (Denham, MJK) or road-trip up the Coral Coast.

Fly + short transfer: Perth (PER) to Shark Bay Airport (MJK), then drive into Denham or continue to Monkey Mia.
Self-drive: From Perth, expect roughly 850 km of driving via the North West Coastal Highway and the turnoff at Overlander Roadhouse toward Denham/Monkey Mia.
Regional hops: Geraldton (GET) or Carnarvon (CVQ) can work as alternative flight points if you are building a longer Coral Coast itinerary.

Because Shark Bay is remote, always check fuel plans, road conditions, and accommodation availability before committing to long drives.

The closest airport for Denham and Monkey Mia. Limited scheduled services, so book early and stay flexible with connections.

Main international and domestic gateway for Western Australia. Best option for connections, car rental variety, and provisioning before heading north.

Regional airport sometimes used as a staging point on Coral Coast itineraries. From Geraldton you continue north by road.

A car is the default in Shark Bay.

2WD is enough for Denham, Monkey Mia, Eagle Bluff, Shell Beach, and Hamelin Pool (on sealed roads).
4WD is strongly recommended for Francois Peron beyond the heritage precinct, for Steep Point, and for many Dirk Hartog Island access routes.
Public transport and rideshare: very limited. Pre-book any transfers and do not assume taxis will be available.

If you are self-driving sand tracks, learn how to reduce tyre pressure, carry a compressor, and travel with recovery gear.

Shark Bay is in Western Australia, so entry requirements are the same as the rest of Australia.

International travelers: check current visa and ETA requirements before booking flights.
Domestic travelers: no special permits are required to enter the region, but you will pay park entry fees for certain reserves.
Biosecurity: follow Australian and Western Australian rules on moving plants, animals, and certain foods, especially if you are driving long distances between regions.

Dive and snorkel logistics are simple but limited.

Rentals and fills: expect limited on-site inventory. If you have specialty gear (camera parts, prescription masks, specific regulator service needs), bring it.
Baggage: check airline baggage allowances carefully if you fly into MJK, since regional flights can have tighter limits.
Rinse and drying: accommodation often has basic rinse options, but wind and salt can be hard on gear. Bring a small gear mesh bag and spare clips.
Boat days: pack seasickness medication, warm layers for wind, and a dry bag for phones and wallets.

Cards are widely accepted in Denham and at major accommodation, but remote services and some smaller operators may prefer cash. Keep some cash on hand for small purchases and as a backup when EFTPOS networks are down.

ATMs are limited and generally concentrated in Denham. If you are heading into remote areas or camping, withdraw cash and fuel up before leaving town.

Australia uses plug type I. Bring an adapter if you are arriving from North America, Europe, or the UK, and make sure chargers are dual voltage.

Communications

Mobile coverage is reliable in Denham and around Monkey Mia but can drop quickly once you leave sealed roads and head into Francois Peron, Edel Land, or remote beach tracks. Telstra generally has the best regional coverage in Western Australia, but do not assume service. Download offline maps, share your route plan, and consider a satellite communicator for remote 4WD travel.

Langue

English is the primary language. Shark Bay is on Malgana Country and you will see Malgana place names and cultural acknowledgements throughout the region.

Assurance

For scuba and freediving, carry dedicated dive accident coverage (for example DAN) and ensure your travel insurance covers remote medical evacuation. If you plan to self-drive sand tracks, confirm that your rental agreement and insurance allow unsealed roads and national park tracks, and understand exclusions for beach driving or river crossings.

Liste de matériel

In-water: mask and snorkel you trust, booties (stonefish + rocky entries), rashguard, and a 3mm to 5mm wetsuit depending on season.
Safety: SMB, whistle, basic first-aid kit, reef-safe sunscreen, and a dry bag.
Topside: windbreaker, sun hat, long sleeves, plenty of water capacity, and binoculars for lookouts.
4WD trips: compressor, tyre gauge, recovery boards, and extra drinking water and snacks.
Tech: offline maps, power bank, and charging cables (limited shopping options once in Denham).
