Most visitors fly to Lord Howe Island Airport (LDH) via Sydney or Brisbane, then continue on a domestic service. International visitors must enter Australia on the mainland first, then connect to Lord Howe as a domestic flight.

Book accommodation before flights when possible. Visitor numbers are capped at 400 at any one time.
There is no regular passenger ferry. Sea access is mainly private yachts (with strict mooring and biosecurity considerations) and freight services.

Small regional airport serving domestic flights from Sydney and Brisbane (seasonal schedules may vary).

The island is compact (about 11 km long) and designed for slow travel.

Bicycles: the main way to get around. Helmets are required when cycling.
Walking: easy to reach most beaches and trailheads on foot.
Limited car and mobility scooter hire exists, but many visitors skip it. The maximum speed limit is 25 km/h.
Evening dining: many accommodations and restaurants coordinate evening transfers, so you can bike during the day and ride at night.

Lord Howe Island is part of Australia (New South Wales). For most travelers this is a domestic trip once you are in Australia.

International arrivals: you cannot clear Australian immigration at Lord Howe Island. Enter Australia on the mainland (for example Sydney) then connect domestically.
Biosecurity: arrive with clean footwear and gear. Avoid bringing soil, seeds or insects. Follow Lord Howe Island Board biosecurity guidance and any inspection instructions.

Flights to Lord Howe Island have special baggage limits compared with standard domestic routes.

Checked baggage: Qantas lists a Lord Howe Island exception where the first bag can be up to 14kg and a second bag up to 9kg (total 23kg), but the second bag may travel on a later flight.
Carry-on: keep critical dive items with you (computer, regulator if you prefer, mask, any prescription lenses).
Rentals: local dive operators can supply cylinders and weights, and often rent full kits. If you are worried about weight limits, plan to rent bulky items and bring personal essentials.

AUD is used everywhere. Cards are commonly accepted at accommodations and many restaurants, but carry some cash for small purchases and honesty boxes.

Banking services are limited on the island. Do not assume you will find a convenient ATM. Bring some cash from the mainland if you rely on it, and ask your accommodation about cash-out options.

Australia uses plug type I. Bring a type I adapter if you are arriving from North America, Europe or the UK.

Communications

Expect a digital detox vibe. Many accommodations offer Wi-Fi, but speeds and reliability can be limited by island infrastructure and weather.

Download maps, tickets and dive documents before you fly.
If you need dependable connectivity for work, confirm your accommodation's internet setup in advance.

Langue

English is the primary language. Visitor services and safety briefings are typically in English.

Assurance

Carry travel insurance that covers flight disruption. Weather can delay arrivals and departures.
Divers and freedivers should carry dive accident insurance that includes evacuation, since the island is remote and hyperbaric treatment is likely on the mainland.
If you bring expensive camera or dive equipment, confirm coverage limits for sports gear.

Liste de matériel

Pack light and plan for both water and hiking days.

Water: reef shoes, rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen, and a wetsuit (often 3mm to 5mm depending on season and tolerance).
Dive: SMB, computer, and any personal-fit items (mask, fins, prescription lenses).
Topside: sturdy shoes for tracks, light rain jacket, and a small torch for evenings.
Island life: reusable water bottle, reusable shopping bag, and a few coins for honesty boxes.
