Two protected archipelagos, one granite-and-gorgonian diving road trip

May through October is the source-backed scuba season, with June and September offering the strongest balance. Water is warming or still warm, authorized centers run broad day-boat schedules, and crowds are usually easier than in July and August. Peak summer brings water around 22°C to 26°C, dry weather, and the most departures, but also premium lodging, busy ferries, and heavy boat traffic. May and October suit flexible experienced divers. From November through April, colder water, rougher weather, and reduced operations make a complete two-park itinerary less dependable.
Allow at least eight nights, with three dive days around La Maddalena or Palau, three around Tavolara, one transfer day, and one weather-flexible surface day. Ten to twelve nights is better for photographers or anyone prioritizing exposed sites such as Secca di Washington and Secca del Papa. The extra time is not filler: the Mistral, current, mooring use, certification mix, and boat schedules can all change the route. A short four-day visit should focus on one park rather than spending prime mornings driving and catching ferries between two different operator systems.
Use two bases. Palau is the easiest northern mainland base because it connects directly to the La Maddalena ferry and simplifies the later drive south. La Maddalena town is more atmospheric and can be ideal when the chosen center departs from the island. For Tavolara, Porto San Paolo minimizes boat logistics; San Teodoro adds beaches and nightlife; Olbia is best for airport convenience and a wider year-round service base. Do not commute between Palau and Porto San Paolo every dive morning. Moving once protects sleep, check-in time, and the weather window.
Yes, protected-area access must be handled correctly, but there is no single permit for both parks. La Maddalena requires prior authorization for diving and lists a 2026 individual scuba rate of EUR 5 per day or EUR 75 per calendar year. An authorized commercial center may already cover the relevant access, so ask before buying anything separately. Tavolara follows its own zoning, buoy, and operator-authorization system. Zone B private diving is limited to specified sites and time bands, while authorized centers can use the managed network. Always verify annual rules immediately before the trip.
Yes, provided the operator selects an appropriate route. Relitto Omega, Tegghia Liscia, sheltered training sites, and shallow granite or Posidonia profiles can suit newly certified divers under calm conditions. The destination's most famous objectives are not all beginner dives. Secca del Papa starts around 15 m or deeper and can have current; Secca di Washington and Secche del Fico add exposure, depth, or flow. A mixed-level group should disclose certifications and recent experience before booking. The guide must keep the group within the shallowest participant's limits, especially under Tavolara's published MPA rules.
Prioritize Secca del Papa in Tavolara and Secca di Washington in La Maddalena, then ask about Secche del Fico, deeper Punta Coticcio extensions, and other current-fed shoals. These dives combine coralligenous walls, gorgonians, schooling fish, blue-water edges, and profiles reaching toward 30 m to 40 m. Advanced certification alone is not enough: operators also assess recent depth experience, buoyancy, gas use, and current comfort. Reserve several days because the skipper may replace an exposed objective with a sheltered route when wind, current, or mooring conditions are unfavorable.
The Mistral is a northwesterly wind that can roughen exposed routes, particularly around the Strait of Bonifacio and La Maddalena's outer shoals. It can arrive in any season, including June or September, and may cause a route change, delayed departure, or cancellation. Good operators use the archipelagos' geography to choose a lee-side site, but shelter is not a promise of identical visibility or depth. Build multiple water days, keep a windproof layer aboard, and never pressure a skipper to run Secca di Washington or another named site when the safety plan favors a protected alternative.
A 5mm full suit works for many divers during the main May-to-October season, especially in July, August, and early September. Cold-sensitive divers, repetitive boat divers, photographers, and visitors in May or October may prefer 7mm, a hood, or a hooded vest. Summer water is commonly reported around 22°C to 26°C, but thermoclines and wind on the ride home can make the day feel cooler. Ask the center for current temperatures one week before arrival, confirm rental thickness and sizes, and carry a dry windproof surface layer regardless of month.
Very much so. Caprera has the Compendio Garibaldino, the Garibaldi Memorial, pine and granite landscapes, and regulated nature trails. La Maddalena town offers harbor evenings and easy dining. Park-compliant excursions visit legal swim and landing points around Spargi, Santa Maria, and Budelli viewpoints, while Spiaggia Rosa remains protected from access. On the Tavolara side, non-divers can take a seasonal passenger boat to Spalmatore, visit San Teodoro Lagoon, attend July film-festival events when scheduled, or drive to Nuragic sites around Arzachena. A rental car turns weather cancellations into strong cultural days.
The best plan is a small authorized boat that can select the lee side around Caprera, Molara, or Tavolara. Scoglio di Tahiti and the Cala Coticcio landscape offer bright granite and sand when accessed legally; Punta Tegge is a practical shore option near La Maddalena; and shallow areas near I Tre Fratelli can reveal Posidonia habitat and rocky fish life. June through September gives the warmest, easiest conditions. Confirm a dedicated guide, flotation, and boat ladder. Do not assume famous protected coves permit unrestricted landing, swimming, anchoring, or independent entry.
For La Maddalena, drive or transfer about 44 km from Olbia Airport to Palau, then take the frequent passenger and vehicle ferry, usually around 15 to 20 minutes. First confirm whether the dive center departs from Palau or the island, since taking a rental car across may be unnecessary. For Tavolara diving, go directly to the operator's base around Porto San Paolo, Olbia, or San Teodoro; Porto San Paolo is roughly 15 km from the airport. The public passenger boat to Tavolara is for island visits and does not replace the authorized dive boat.
Stop diving, provide the highest available oxygen concentration within your training, monitor breathing and responsiveness, and call 112 for urgent medical help. Use 1530 for maritime rescue and contact DAN Europe at +39 06 4211 5685 for diving-medicine coordination. Share the diver's symptoms, profiles, gas, location, and oxygen use. Do not put the diver back in the water or drive independently toward a chamber. Paolo Merlo Hospital has emergency services, but regional authorities coordinate hyperbaric cases through the wider Sardinian network, so the correct receiving facility may require boat, road, or air transfer.
