Expect cold thermoclines, line descents, possible current, surface chop, and weather-driven site substitutions. Use a DSMB, monitor gas and ascent obligations conservatively, and never enter wreck or cave overheads without formal training and redundancy. Vis has a local outpatient clinic with emergency and ambulance functions in Vis Town, but serious trauma or decompression illness may require evacuation to the mainland. A 2026 government medical-facility listing confirms a hyperbaric chamber at Clinical Hospital Split. DAN's Vis destination report also noted recompression capability in the region, but travelers should not assume that any island chamber is staffed or available without current operator confirmation. Give emergency dispatch the boat name, position, number of people, symptoms, dive profile, and oxygen status, and begin first aid under professional direction.
Exposed Adriatic Weather
Wind and rough sea can close Blue Cave, cancel small boats, change ferries, or force dive-site swaps. Keep flexible days and obey skipper and harbor decisions.
Cold Deep Water and Thermoclines
Below roughly 20 m, local guidance places water around 16°C to 18°C. Warm air is not a reason to underdress for repetitive wreck dives.
Depth, Decompression, and Entanglement
Many signature wrecks are advanced or technical. Lines, nets, enclosed structure, cold, gas consumption, and limited direct ascent make untrained penetration or depth chasing unacceptable.
Current and Boat Traffic
Offshore reefs, pinnacles, cave entrances, and narrow coves can combine current with active boat routes. Use a visible buoy or DSMB and remain with local supervision.
The Vis Archipelago UNESCO Global Geopark links geological protection, education, and sustainable local development. Stay on marked trails, carry out waste, respect private land, and do not damage caves, cliffs, rock formations, or dry-stone structures. Underwater, maintain neutral buoyancy and never touch, move, or remove amphorae, wreck fittings, aircraft parts, coral, shells, or other material. Croatia uses activity-permit procedures around underwater cultural artifacts, so visit regulated sites through an authorized center. Blue Cave and Monk Seal Cave are protected natural monuments with specific conduct rules; in Blue Cave, anchoring, fishing, bathing, swimming, and diving are prohibited. Use moorings or operator-approved anchoring practices and avoid disturbing wildlife.
