Both are important, but the destination is land-based and shore-led. Fehmarn, Kiel Fjord, and the Schwedeneck coast offer many car-accessible or beach-accessible sites for independent or guided diving. Fehmarn's signature wrecks, including Docktor, Prahm, and deeper schooners, require local boat arrangements. A balanced trip usually combines several shore sites with one or two weather-dependent wreck bookings. There is no meaningful liveaboard planning model. A rental car, pre-booked cylinders and weights, and a willingness to change sites after the wind briefing are more useful than a fixed cruise-style itinerary.

Visibility is variable and should never be promised from the calendar alone. Fehmarn's tourism authority says it can reach 15 m, but many dives are conducted in much shorter visual range. Wind can stir shallow sediment, and conditions may reflect the previous day's weather even after the surface looks calm. Stone reefs and offshore wrecks can differ from nearby beaches. Ask local operators about recent wind history, carry a reliable compass and light, keep buddy spacing tight, and choose navigation plans that remain safe when the view contracts.

Use a system chosen for the actual water temperature, dive duration, surface interval, and your cold tolerance. Many warmer-season visitors use a complete 5mm to 7mm system with hood, gloves, and boots, while trained divers often prefer a drysuit for comfort and flexibility. Winter is a specialist cold-water period. Test rental suits before a boat day, carry windproof surface layers, and shorten the plan at the first sign of persistent shivering, numbness, reduced dexterity, or poor judgment. Drysuit use requires training, correct weighting, and an appropriate buoyancy-failure plan.

Strande in Kiel Fjord is the clearest locally supported option. Aquarius Tauchservice has an established apnea focus and uses the sheltered area for training; the protected basin reaches about 7 m. Fehmarn's Presen and calm-day Staberhuk may suit experienced local teams, but current, cold, slippery entries, and surface traffic make them less forgiving. Plan June through September, contact an instructor before arrival, and use a trained buddy providing direct one-up-one-down supervision. A bright float, lanyard for line work, thermal protection, and a no-solo rule are essential.

Use a supervised beach or an organized UNDINE nature activity, check the flag at the exact beach, and ask lifeguards about local current and jellyfish. A red DLRG flag means no swimming. A yellow flag means children and weak swimmers should remain out. Strong easterly and northeasterly winds can produce dangerous localized undertow between Scharbeutz and Timmendorfer Strand. Wear full thermal protection, stay within designated bathing water unless guided, avoid piers and harbor channels with traffic, and leave the water before cold affects coordination. Protected-area rules, harbor and navigation law, land access, local permissions, and posted seasonal limits still apply. Fly to Hamburg, collect a suitably sized rental car, and follow the A1 and B207 over the Fehmarnsund Bridge. The X85 express bus runs from Luebeck through coastal stops to Burg and Puttgarden, but bulky scuba bags and limited bicycle capacity make it less convenient. Expect western Baltic small life rather than tropical abundance. Aquarius reports spring lumpsucker nesting at Strande. Harbor porpoises use shallow western Fehmarn waters through the year, but sightings are opportunistic and should never be pursued. A light, patient hovering, careful finning, and close inspection of habitat produce better encounters than swimming quickly.

Kiel and Laboe add waterfront walks, sailing culture, the Naval Memorial, and U-995. Luebeck's UNESCO old town can fill a full day or weekend, while Travemuende, Scharbeutz, and Timmendorfer Strand provide promenades, cafes, spas, and beach time. April through October is the broadest topside season. During wind cancellations, pair divers and non-divers at a museum, spa, or historic-town day rather than waiting for a marginal water window.
