Hamburg Airport is the main international gateway for the full coast. Luebeck Airport has a smaller, seasonal scheduled network and can be convenient for Luebeck Bay. By road, the A1 continues toward Fehmarn via the B207 and the Fehmarnsund Bridge. At the researched date, major fixed-link construction can add delays, so check Fehmarn's official mobility page before departure.
Direct rail service onto Fehmarn remains suspended during Fehmarnbelt works. The X85 express bus links Luebeck with Haffkrug, Lensahn, Oldenburg, Grossenbrode, Burg auf Fehmarn, and Puttgarden on a regular daily schedule. Bicycle capacity is limited and seasonal bicycle services require advance checking. Kiel and Luebeck are well connected by German rail, but a rental car is the practical choice for cylinders, multiple shore sites, Wallnau, and wind-driven site changes.

A car is strongly recommended for dive gear, early shore entries, wind-driven coast changes, and Fehmarn's spread-out sites. Kiel and Luebeck work well without a car for city days. Fehmarn's X85 express bus substitutes for suspended rail service, but bulky scuba luggage and limited bicycle capacity reduce convenience. Local island buses, taxis, and a limited free local bus zone around Burg can help non-divers. Parking is often paid or seasonally pressured near beaches; never block emergency access, dikes, slipways, or working harbors.
Germany is in the Schengen Area. Requirements depend on nationality, passport, purpose, and length of stay. The German Federal Foreign Office states that many visa-exempt travelers may visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without taking employment, while other third-country nationals need a Schengen visa. EU, EEA, and Swiss travelers use their applicable free-movement documents. Check the Federal Foreign Office Visa Navigator and the official EU EES and ETIAS portal close to travel because border systems and authorization requirements can change. Carry the same identity document for the Puttgarden-Rodby ferry and any Denmark add-on.
Pre-book cylinders, weights, fills, guides, and boat spaces with a local center. Confirm valve compatibility, maximum working pressure, rental-document requirements, and whether the operator expects a recent logged dive or medical form. Pack regulators, computer, mask, prescription items, and essential exposure components in carry-on baggage within airline rules. Follow airline rules for lights and batteries, and never fly with a pressurized cylinder. A vehicle simplifies wet-gear transport, but use a waterproof liner, secure heavy items, and keep cylinders restrained and ventilated according to the rental center's instructions.

Cards are widely accepted in hotels, supermarkets, restaurants, and established dive centers. Carry some cash for small beach kiosks, parking machines, local buses, club fees, or rural businesses that may not accept every card.
ATMs are easy to find in Kiel, Luebeck, Burg auf Fehmarn, and larger resort towns. Remote beaches and small villages may have none, so withdraw before a shore-diving day.

EU roaming may apply to eligible subscriptions; other travelers should compare an eSIM or local prepaid plan.

German is the working language for signs, safety notices, weather briefings, and emergency services. English is common in tourism and many dive centers, but not guaranteed at every club or rural site. Learn or save key terms for current, visibility, wind direction, harbor, nature reserve, emergency oxygen, and decompression illness.
Versicherung
Carry travel medical insurance that explicitly covers recreational scuba or freediving at the planned depth and certification level, plus hyperbaric treatment, specialist consultation, ambulance or maritime rescue, and repatriation. An EHIC or equivalent entitlement may help eligible European travelers obtain medically necessary public care, but it is not a substitute for rescue, repatriation, equipment, or trip-cancellation cover.
