Atlantic wrecks, rocky reefs and cliff-lined days on Portugal's southern coast
Use qualified local supervision, appropriate exposure protection and a conservative plan for changing Atlantic conditions. For an emergency call 112; for diving-specific assistance use DAN Europe. Conservation planning begins before departure: confirm the site, zone and authorized activity instead of assuming that all coastal water is open to independent use.
Complete the operator's health screening and obtain medical clearance when the form requires it. Discuss recent experience, thermal protection, current, visibility, depth and entry/exit demands before paying for a particular dive. Confirm that the team has emergency oxygen, communications and a practical evacuation plan. Stay inside your training and equipment limits, and do not enter wrecks or caves simply because a guide can fit through an opening.
DAN freediving guidance emphasizes a trained, directly attentive buddy and appropriate weighting. Never make breath-hold practice a solo activity or a simultaneous descent with nobody providing safety. Do not use hyperventilation to extend a breath hold. Keep formal freediving and scuba on separate days in the proposed itinerary, and seek qualified advice before combining them. Surface swimmers should use the locally approved swimming area and respect flags, surf, navigation channels and instructions.
For asymptomatic divers, DAN consensus guidance recommends at least 12 hours before flying after a single no-decompression dive and at least 18 hours after repetitive or multiday no-decompression diving. Dives requiring decompression call for substantially longer than 18 hours. These are minimum guidelines, not a guarantee against decompression sickness. A full non-diving final day can make a conservative holiday schedule easier to maintain, but it is not a universal medical clearance.
Do not add a higher inland excursion immediately after scuba without considering altitude exposure. Anyone with possible diving-related symptoms should stop diving and seek urgent assessment rather than flying, driving into the hills or returning underwater to attempt treatment.
For serious symptoms or an accident, call 112 first and give the exact beach, marina or boat position. Tell responders about the diving history. DAN Europe can support diving-medical and receiving-facility coordination; keep the emergency number and policy details available offline. Provide first-aid oxygen when available and when someone is trained to administer it.
A hyperbaric service has been documented in a primary HPA publication about Alvor, but this research does not verify current 24-hour acceptance of diving emergencies. Do not self-route to a chamber based on a directory or wellness listing. Let emergency services and dive-medicine professionals determine treatment and transfer. SNS 24 is for non-emergency health advice, not rescue or urgent decompression-illness assessment.
No swimming into Benagil
The maritime-authority rules prohibit swimming or float-assisted access into the cave and landing on its beach. A calm-looking entrance is not an exception.
A photograph is not a wreck condition report
Published damage at Zambeze illustrates why old images cannot establish safe access today. Avoid wreck penetration without appropriate specialist training, equipment and a current plan.
Shallow does not mean sheltered
At Praia da Baleeira, navigation and boat separation matter as well as depth. At any beach, abandon a session when surf, visibility or the exit is unsuitable.
Cold and wind can end a good session
Local providers describe substantial wetsuits for Algarve diving. Reserve suitable protection and change into dry layers between sessions instead of treating summer air temperature as water-temperature evidence.
The Pedra do Valado founding rules cover a central-coast area associated with Lagoa, Silves and Albufeira. Maritime-tourism and organized recreational activities have authorization requirements. Entry to the strict-protection zone is limited to specified purposes, including visitation with prior ICNF authorization; it is not an ordinary open-access dive zone. Confirm current requirements with ICNF and the operator.
Use controlled buoyancy and secure loose equipment. Do not stand on reef habitat, move animals for photography, collect marine life or souvenirs, or allow an anchor to damage habitat. These are responsible operating practices, not a claim that every Algarve site has an identical legal rulebook. Return any accidental marine-life contact or access concern to the operator for guidance.
Follow Benagil navigation and visitor rules; cave sightseeing does not authorize swimming or beach landing. Treat Ria Formosa seahorse sanctuaries as conservation sites. Public tourist entry was not verified, and the wildlife should not be handled, chased or sold as a guaranteed encounter. Choose a provider that can explain the permission and conservation purpose of its proposed activity.
