Protected Mediterranean reefs beneath terraced vineyards at the edge of France and Catalonia
Cote Vermeille combines formal protected-area law with Mediterranean weather exposure. Use authorized operators, treat Tramontane and sea-state decisions as non-negotiable, wear enough thermal protection, and preserve spare days for site changes. In an emergency, maritime rescue is reached on 196 from shore or VHF channel 16 at sea; 112 is the European general emergency number and 15 reaches SAMU medical dispatch in France. The regional hyperbaric facility is at Clinique Saint-Pierre in Perpignan.
Reserve scuba requires authorization and must remain outside the enhanced-protection zone. Fixed moorings must be used in designated sectors, anchoring on Posidonia or other protected habitat is prohibited, and diver propulsion vehicles are not allowed inside the reserve. Buoyancy compensation is mandatory. Private shore teams have defined size and authorization conditions. Night dives require notice to the reserve manager by 17:00 on the same day. Check the Cap Bear marine forecast, carry an SMB and audible signal, stay within certification and gas limits, and accept a skipper's site swap. Freedivers must train outside reserve waters with an active buddy or coach and surface-rescue plan.
For suspected decompression illness, arterial gas embolism, serious aspiration, blackout, chest pain, neurological symptoms, or major trauma, stop diving, provide the highest safe concentration of oxygen if trained and available, and activate emergency services immediately. From shore call 196 for maritime rescue or 112; at sea use VHF channel 16. SAMU is 15. Do not self-drive a symptomatic diver or descend again. Clinique Saint-Pierre's hyperbaric center in Perpignan is roughly from Banyuls by road, but routing and acceptance should be coordinated by emergency medical services.
Tramontane can change the plan fast
A clear-looking morning can become rough and wind-exposed. Check the Cap Bear marine forecast, respect skipper or lifeguard decisions, and avoid exposed coastal paths when wind approaches the official trail warning threshold of 65 km/h.
Freediving is prohibited inside the reserve
Do not assume a reserve scuba site, mooring, or snorkel trail is legal for apnea. Formal freedive training must use an operator-verified location outside reserve waters and outside any temporary restriction.
Cold water is a real exposure risk
Winter and early spring water can sit near 12°C to 14°C. Use appropriate insulation, shorten repetitive exposure, and account for wind chill during surface intervals and boat rides.
Do not assume the coastal path is continuous
The official tourism page has listed the Peyrefite-to-Cerbere section as closed. Use current route notices and public transport rather than following an old through-route track into a blocked or hazardous segment.
The reserve protects rocky reef, Posidonia, coralligenous habitat, soft sediment, underwater cavities, and a large Mediterranean species community. Divers and snorkelers must not touch or damage the substrate, take organisms or objects, feed or attract wildlife, or stand on living habitat. Use installed moorings where required and never anchor in prohibited sectors or on Posidonia. The enhanced-protection zone is closed to diving, and apnea is prohibited throughout reserve waters. Keep fins clear of the bottom, secure gauges and alternate air sources, use buoy handrails rather than the seabed at Peyrefite, and report damaged moorings or observed violations to the reserve team.
