Cold-water wrecks, chalk reefs, and Baltic maritime culture from Cape Arkona to Warnemünde
This coast demands conservative cold-water practice, local navigation knowledge, and respect for both natural and cultural protection. The main operational risks are thermal stress, variable visibility, wind-driven sea state, current, shipping, entanglement, unstable cliffs, and legacy munitions. Wrecks are habitats and archaeological places. Artificial reefs are research and fisheries-management sites. Use established operators, carry surface signaling and cutting equipment, leave all objects in place, and treat weather cancellation as a successful safety decision.
Complete a full conditions and weighting check in brackish water. Match exposure protection to bottom temperature and thermocline, not air temperature. Keep the team compact in low visibility, use a primary and backup light, and follow the shot-line, ascent, DSMB, and lost-buddy procedures specified by the skipper. Avoid penetration unless trained, equipped, and explicitly permitted. Carry an accessible cutting tool but do not attempt solo ghost-net removal. At Cape Arkona and port-adjacent sites, current and vessel traffic make independent shore entries inappropriate. For suspected decompression illness, neurological symptoms, breathing difficulty, unusual fatigue, or severe pain, provide oxygen if trained, call 112 or MRCC Bremen, and contact DAN. Do not descend again or drive yourself to a chamber.
University Medical Center Rostock provides major emergency care on the mainland, while Sana Hospital Rügen in Bergen is the island hospital. Neither should be treated as a guaranteed walk-in hyperbaric destination. In a diving emergency, call 112 and state that it is a suspected diving injury, give the dive profile and breathing gases, and let emergency services and DAN select the receiving and recompression facility. Keep oxygen, first-aid equipment, thermal protection, emergency contacts, exact site coordinates, diver medical information, and a written evacuation plan aboard. The German 116117 service is for urgent but non-life-threatening medical problems and is primarily German-language.
Cold water and thermoclines
Summer surface warmth can conceal much colder water at depth. Use exposure protection for the planned bottom temperature, not the beach reading, and end the dive before dexterity or judgment declines.
Weather-led cancellations
Wind direction and short-period Baltic seas can close a launch or make an exposed headland unsuitable at short notice. Keep a flexible day and accept the skipper's final decision.
Low visibility and silt
Plankton, wind, and sediment can reduce clarity quickly. Maintain close buddy positioning, secure gauges, use lights, and avoid finning into soft bottom or wreck interiors.
Current, boats, and port approaches
Cape Arkona and harbor-adjacent waters can combine current with active navigation. Use local guides, DSMBs where directed, and never enter shipping, ferry, or harbor lanes independently.
Use no-touch, no-take diving on wrecks, chalk, mussel beds, stones, seagrass, and artificial structures. Do not move artifacts for photographs. Purposeful searching and recovery may require heritage authorization. Observe national-park navigation restrictions and all fishing-protection rules around artificial reefs, including any anchoring prohibition identified in the skipper's briefing. Report ghost gear instead of improvising a lift, because nets may be loaded, attached, contaminated, or archaeologically entangled. Never touch suspicious ordnance or sealed cylinders. Minimize silt, secure hoses and gauges, use established moorings or shot lines, and support operators involved in documented conservation work.
