May through October is the broadest scuba window, with June and September offering the best mix of active boats, warm or warming water, and less peak-holiday pressure. July and August bring water near 24°C to 26°C around Portofino, but boats, hotels, trains, and villages are busiest. Secca dell'Isuela, deeper gorgonian walls, Secca delle Aragoste, and the Mohawk Deer wreck require stronger buoyancy, gas, depth, current, and boat skills. Complete a realistic check dive before requesting a famous advanced site.
Book a Portofino MPA-authorized operator from Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure, or another park gateway. The statue's upper section is around 13 m and its base around 17 m, making it a moderate scuba objective but a deep surface view for snorkelers. Guided snorkel tours may include it only when the sea and visibility are suitable. Freedivers need formal safety, one-up, one-down supervision, a visible float, and legal zone access. Passenger ferries reach San Fruttuoso, but a ferry ticket is not a dive permit or safety plan.
Access depends on the exact reserve. Portofino allows dives through authorized centers and has a formal private-diver authorization route with fees, certification, support-boat, flag, site, and notification rules. Cinque Terre uses its own park authorization framework and current authorized-center list, including for designated itineraries inside highly protected zones. Bergeggi's 2026 rules do not allow independent visitor scuba in Zones B and C; dives are guided by authorized centers. Bergeggi apnea in Zones B and C requires prior authorization, while Zone A remains prohibited. Confirm the current map and rules immediately before booking.
Choose the site by conditions rather than fame. In the Portofino area, guided boats can use protected rock and Posidonia coves and may visit Cristo degli Abissi when clarity is sufficient. Paraggi offers approachable bay scenery when local access and boat channels allow. Cinque Terre National Park lists official swimming itineraries at Manarola and Riomaggiore. Bergeggi permits swimming and snorkeling in Zones B and C around boulders, meadows, and island shallows, but not in Zone A. May through October is the main season, with the warmest water from July into September.
June through September is the most comfortable default because warmer water improves repeated surface recovery and local marine services are fully active. May and October can work with a suitable suit and a settled forecast. Outside this window, instructor-led training may continue, but cool water, wind chop, rough seas, and shorter comfortable sessions make it a specialist choice. Use a local AIDA-oriented instructor or guide, never freedive alone, do not hyperventilate, and use one-up, one-down supervision. Check Portofino zoning and obtain any required authorization before entering protected water.
A 5mm full suit suits many divers in the main warm season, though a hood is valuable for repetitive or deeper profiles. Late-summer water around Portofino can reach roughly 24°C to 26°C, but thermoclines can make depth feel cooler. For winter and early spring, when water may be near 12°C to 14°C, a 7mm hooded system or properly trained drysuit setup is more realistic. Ask the operator for recent bottom temperature, not only surface temperature, and choose protection for the longest planned dive.
A Portofino operator reports average visibility around 15 m to 20 m, while summer snorkeling days can fall below 10 m or approach 25 m. These are planning ranges, not guarantees. Rain runoff, plankton, wind, surge, sediment, and recent storms can change clarity quickly, sometimes within the same promontory. Divers can still enjoy macro subjects and wall texture in moderate visibility, but snorkel views of Cristo degli Abissi need unusually useful clarity because the statue begins around 13 m below the surface.
Use at least two bases. Camogli or Santa Margherita Ligure works best for Portofino MPA boats, San Fruttuoso access, and straightforward rail connections. Levanto or La Spezia simplifies Cinque Terre diving, park days, and luggage handling. Bergeggi sits well west of both clusters, so add Spotorno, Noli, Savona, or another western base only when you have an extra night or a dedicated segment. A single hotel for all three reserves creates early transfers and missed boats. For seven nights, allocate four or five nights near Portofino and two or three near Cinque Terre.
Yes for Portofino and Cinque Terre, with caveats. Regional trains link Genoa, Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, Levanto, Monterosso, and La Spezia. Buses, taxis, trails, and seasonal boats bridge the final gap to Portofino and San Fruttuoso. Cinque Terre is usually easier by rail than by car because village road access and parking are constrained. Bergeggi is less rail-direct: use Spotorno-Noli or Savona, then arrange bus, taxi, operator pickup, or a car. Confirm the last train and never tie a weather-dependent ferry return to a tight airport connection.
Non-divers can take a passenger boat from Camogli to San Fruttuoso, visit the abbey and beach, continue to Portofino, hike the Portofino Natural Park, or explore Camogli's harbor. Cinque Terre offers rail-linked villages, terraces, official paths, food, and swimming itineraries. Bergeggi adds beaches, island viewpoints, and guided kayak outings, while Genoa supplies the aquarium, maritime heritage, palaces, and an all-weather historic center. From April through November, biologist-led Pelagos Sanctuary cruises add a wildlife day. Check ferry, trail, and weather status before committing.

Insurance should cover evacuation, recompression, repatriation, and the planned depth and activity.
It is a land-based, local-operator destination. The signature sites are reached on day boats from Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure, Cinque Terre gateways, or the Bergeggi and Savona area, then paired with rail, ferry, trail, and village travel. Liveaboards are not a meaningful core planning path for this coast, so the correct trip format is local-only. A two-base itinerary is more useful than sleeping aboard: it places divers near the separate marine-park operators and gives non-divers independent access to Portofino, San Fruttuoso, Cinque Terre, Genoa, and western Liguria.
