Toulon-Hyeres Airport is the nearest air gateway, while Marseille Provence usually provides the broadest practical alternative for international connections. Toulon and Hyeres also sit on the French rail and motorway network, making a train-plus-local-transfer plan realistic. Most dive travelers should sleep on the mainland in Hyeres, Giens, La Londe-les-Maures, or Toulon, then join the operator's own boat. Porquerolles ferries depart year-round from Tour Fondue with a short crossing; Port-Cros has year-round service from Port Saint-Pierre in Hyeres but a reduced off-season timetable. Seasonal boats also run from Toulon, Saint-Mandrier, La Londe, Bormes, and Le Lavandou. Check the exact pier, parking plan, baggage rules, and return sailing before travel.

A secondary international option east of the destination. It can work when flights are substantially better, but the coastal transfer is longer and traffic-sensitive.

A rental car is useful for switching among Toulon, Hyeres, Giens, La Londe, Tour Fondue, and different marinas, but summer parking can be difficult and road queues are common near ferry terminals. Trains connect the regional cities, and local buses serve the airport, Hyeres, Toulon, Giens, and some coastal corridors, with frequency varying by season. Port-Cros is explored on foot. Porquerolles is mainly pedestrian and bicycle oriented. Do not assume a public ferry departs from the same pier as the dive boat; confirm the exact meeting point and whether the operator provides parking instructions.
France is in the Schengen area. EU, EEA, and Swiss travelers generally enter with a valid national identity card or passport. Other travelers need a passport and may need a short-stay visa depending on nationality; the standard Schengen short-stay framework is up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Passport-validity, visa, transit, and minor-travel rules depend on citizenship and routing. Check the official France-Visas wizard and the relevant government travel advice before booking. Carry evidence of insurance, accommodation, onward travel, and sufficient funds if required by your traveler category.
Keep cylinders, weights, and rental equipment with the mainland dive operator. Public ferries and island bicycles are poorly suited to a full scuba kit, and many day boats load directly at the center's marina. Reserve unusual sizes, DIN or yoke preferences, sidemount, twinsets, stage cylinders, rebreather support, enriched air, or technical gases well in advance. Ask about storage and drying if diving on consecutive days. Label personal equipment, bring certification and medical documents, and pack essential regulators, computer, mask, and exposure protection in a way that reduces the impact of delayed checked baggage.

Cards are widely accepted on the mainland and at established island businesses, but carry a modest cash reserve for small purchases, transport contingencies, or a failed terminal. Port-Cros has limited services and a seasonal ATM, while Hyeres and Toulon have normal banking access.
ATMs are easy to find in Toulon and Hyeres. Port-Cros tourism guidance lists seasonal ATM availability roughly from April to October; do not rely on an island cash withdrawal outside that period.

Bring a Type C or E adapter and use dual-voltage chargers. Confirm charging access on small boats or island accommodation before relying on it for cameras, scooters used outside prohibited park zones, lights, or computers.
Communications
France has strong mainstream mobile and data service in urban areas, and EU roaming rules may cover eligible European plans. Coverage can weaken behind island relief, in remote coves, or offshore. Download ferry tickets, maps, certification cards, CaPeL proof, and operator directions before departure. Confirm the operator's day-of-contact channel and keep the phone dry and charged. VHF, not a mobile app, is the primary maritime distress tool aboard a properly equipped vessel.
Langue
French is the working language for regulations, harbors, transport, and many briefings. Tourism-facing centers often offer English and sometimes additional languages, but never assume a technical or emergency briefing will be available in your preferred language. Confirm the teaching and briefing language before paying for a course, deep wreck, rebreather, or decompression program. Learn basic French terms for current, depth, decompression stop, lost diver, oxygen, allergy, and emergency.
Assurance
Carry travel and dive insurance that explicitly covers the planned maximum depth, wreck or technical activity, enriched air or rebreather use where relevant, freediving, emergency oxygen, maritime evacuation, hyperbaric treatment, medical transfer, repatriation, and trip interruption. A European Health Insurance Card may support eligible state care for qualifying European travelers but does not replace evacuation or specialist dive cover. Keep policy and assistance numbers offline, and verify whether the operator or federation requires separate third-party liability.
