Protected grouper reefs, legendary deep wrecks, and island days off the Var coast
The destination combines normal Mediterranean boat diving with genuinely demanding current, depth, wreck, cold-at-depth, and weather hazards. Choose an operator whose procedures match the hardest planned dive, not the easiest. In the Port-Cros marine core, conservation rules are operational rules: authorization, capacity limits, protected moorings, no feeding or handling, no rock turning, no anchoring on Posidonia, regulated night diving, and no underwater scooters. For an emergency at sea, use VHF Channel 16 or call 196; 112 is the European emergency number.
Submit an honest experience profile and accept the operator's site decision. For Donator-class wrecks, plan depth, gas, reserve, current, ascent, decompression exposure, thermal protection, and lost-line or separated-diver procedures before entry. Carry a personal computer, DSMB, spool, audible signal, and appropriate redundancy. Wreck penetration, planned decompression, rebreathers, scooters outside prohibited zones, and mixed gas require matching training and operator support. Do not freedive alone, hyperventilate, or perform deep breath-hold sessions after scuba. Follow current agency no-fly guidance after the final dive and seek medical advice after any omitted decompression, rapid ascent, neurological symptom, breathing problem, or unusual fatigue.
Toulon has a hospital hyperbaric oxygen service at Sainte-Anne Military Hospital. It is not a substitute for emergency activation or an excuse to delay first aid. In suspected decompression illness, breathing injury, or serious marine trauma, stop diving, give the highest available concentration of oxygen to a trained protocol, monitor the diver, keep the person horizontal and hydrated when appropriate, and contact emergency services. At sea, use VHF Channel 16 or 196 for CROSS; from land, use 15 or 112. Do not drive a symptomatic diver to a chamber without medical coordination, and never recompress a diver in the water.
Mistral and easterly wind
Strong wind can create rough crossings, surface chop, difficult recovery, harbor restrictions, and complete cancellations. Follow the operator and official marine forecast rather than a general weather app.
Deep wreck, current, and decompression risk
Donator-class dives may run below normal recreational comfort, with current and cold increasing gas use and task load. Use the required certification, recent experience, redundant planning, and a conservative turnaround.
Thermocline and wind-driven upwelling
A warm surface forecast can hide sharply colder water below. Carry exposure protection for the planned depth and repetitive profile, not just the beach temperature.
Summer heat and fire closures
From late June into September, parts of the islands may close at short notice because of wildfire risk. Never cross a barrier or assume yesterday's trail status remains valid.
Port-Cros National Park protects seagrass, reef, coralligenous communities, fish, and cultural resources. Obtain the required authorization and sticker, use designated dive moorings, and keep anchors off Posidonia. Never feed wildlife, touch the substrate, handle animals or plants, turn stones, collect objects, or enter a closed zone. The park limits authorized sites to 40 divers and gives divers priority on designated buoys under published conditions. Underwater scooters are prohibited in the marine core, and night diving is regulated. Maintain neutral buoyancy, secure gauges and alternate air sources, keep lights controlled around animals, and leave shells, artifacts, and wreck material in place.
