Oban delivers a rare combination of accessible skills diving and serious expedition terrain. Start at Gallanach Reef, where Puffin Dive Centre uses a sheltered shallow bay for training and checks, then progress to SS Breda or a Lochaline charter. From Lochaline, day boats reach wrecks, walls and scenic alternatives across the Sound of Mull. The signature experience is cold-water boat diving rather than a fixed resort schedule: skippers select sites around tide, wind and group competence. Expect drysuits, DSMBs, low light, variable visibility and substantial depth at some walls.
A sheltered Sound of Mull base with a wall beginning around {{ 5 | distance:m }} and continuing far beyond recreational depth.
A protected Oban shore site from about {{ 1.5 | distance:m }} to {{ 9 | distance:m }}, useful for courses, weighting, drysuit practice and a first dive before committing to deeper boat sites.
Checklist da operadora
Reserve boats, accommodation and any required training together, especially for school holidays and club weekends. Confirm certification, recent drysuit experience, maximum planned depth, gas needs and whether the booking is whole-boat or individual spaces. Lochaline Boat Charters lists capacity for up to 12 divers per boat and has onboard compressors; Puffin provides fills, hire and technical support in Oban. Build a substitute-site list, check tide and weather with the skipper, label every cylinder, and carry proof of appropriate dive insurance.
