When to go

Best time to visit French Polynesia

French Polynesia is warm all year, but the practical travel split is dry season versus wet season.

Best overall window

May - October

Drier, cooler, and usually easier for flights, ferries, lagoon tours, and Tuamotu pass planning. Expect warm water around 26°C to 28°C and tradewind days around 18 km/h to 25 km/h.

Outside that window

Warmer, wetter, more humid, and more variable. Lagoon trips still run, but outerisland buffers become more important.

Choose your trip style

Start with the overall answer, then switch only when scuba, freedive, snorkel, or topside timing changes the trip in a meaningful way.

July is a strong month for cultural programming around Tahiti, making it useful for divers who want reef days and evening Polynesian dance, music, and sport events.

Always true for this destination
  • The driest months are not always the calmest for every lagoon, because trade winds can be brisk even in prime season.
Seasonal cautions
  • Apr, Nov: Transition months with useful value, fewer peak-season crowds, and a mix of calm water and wet-season humidity.
  • Dec to Mar: Warmer, wetter, more humid, and more variable. Lagoon trips still run, but outer-island buffers become more important.
