When To Go

Season planner for Abrolhos Marine National Park

Abrolhos has two headline seasons. For underwater visibility and warmer water, aim for December to March. For humpback whales, plan June to November, on peak sightings commonly July to October. Winter can bring stronger winds and rougher crossings, so keep a buffer day and watch forecasts.

Ideal: Warmer water 24°C to 27°C, generally better visibility and more comfortable surface intervals.

Plan Carefully: Start of whale season and windier patterns; crossings can be uncomfortable and cancellations are more common.

If you can only pick one window, choose based on your priority: clearest reef diving (DecMar) or whales (JulOct).

Ideal: Best odds for calm seas and clearer water; longer, more comfortable dive days.

Plan Carefully: Whale season brings spectacle but also more wind and surface chop; keep dives conservative and expect schedule changes.

If your trip is whalemotivated, book early for July to October and keep your dive goals flexible.

Ideal: Calmer surface conditions improve safety for lines, floats, and recovery breathing.

Plan Carefully: More wind and chop; treat freediving as optional unless the day is calm.

Freediving is most enjoyable when the surface is glassy.

Ideal: Warmer water and typically calmer seas, making it easier to stay relaxed at the surface.

Plan Carefully: Windier patterns can make long surface swims uncomfortable; rely on guided moorings and floats.

If you are not a strong swimmer, prioritize summer months and ask for protected snorkel stops.

Ideal: Best whale watching window. Bring a wind layer for boat spray and long deck time.

Plan Carefully: Hotter and often busier on the coast; build rest time around early boat departures.

Brazilian school holidays can raise prices and reduce availability, especially in December, January, and July.
