East Bali is a road-transfer destination, and arranging a driver through your hotel or dive shop reduces friction, especially if you arrive late. Expect a scenic drive that can slow down in traffic, so avoid stacking tight same-day dive commitments after landing. If you have bulky camera or freedive gear, a private car is also easier than hopping between local transport options. Once in Padangbai or Candidasa, most diving is handled by your operator's boat logistics.

The Gili sites off Candidasa are in tide-driven water influenced by the Lombok Strait, so current can be strong and can change during the dive. Some dives may involve negative entries, fast drifts, and the possibility of down-currents near walls. They are best for divers with solid buoyancy, calm gas management, and comfort using an SMB. For newer divers, Padangbai is usually the best starting point because several sites offer sheltered conditions and easy logistics. Look for plans that include calm shore or short-boat sites first, then gradually add current if you feel comfortable. Bias Tugel / White Sand Beach and the Padang Bai Coral Restoration Area are commonly chosen for relaxed profiles, buoyancy practice, and long bottom times. Ask your operator to align the plan with the tide and to keep maximum depth conservative while you build confidence.

Padangbai has the most convenient beach snorkeling in this area because reefs sit close to shore and entries are straightforward in calm conditions. Bias Tugel / White Sand Beach is a frequent favorite for seeing coral and fish without a boat. For a conservation angle, the Padang Bai Coral Restoration Area can be rewarding when visibility is good, but treat it gently and never kick coral structures. Always avoid boat lanes, go early for calmer seas, and use a float if you are outside a marked swimming area.
