Cold-water walls, freshwater wreck details, and Alpine shore days within reach of Munich
Treat both lakes as serious cold-water environments with multi-use traffic and legally protected zones. Call 112 for immediate rescue, fire, or medical help. The safest plan combines a local briefing, conservative depth and gas limits, thermal protection, an observed surface, exact legal-entry checks, and a non-diving fallback. Do not self-transport a suspected decompression casualty unless emergency services direct it.
Use a trained buddy and avoid solo diving. Complete a shallow freshwater weighting check before any wall, set a hard maximum depth, and carry primary and backup lights where ambient light can disappear. Advanced profiles need an appropriate redundant-gas strategy, clear lost-buddy and lost-line procedures, and a shore tender who knows the site and emergency location.
At Walchensee, follow altitude-aware computer or table procedures. Keep at least 20 m from the Niedernach outlet, 30 m from the Obernach structure, and 50 m from the Urfeld intake. Never enter a closed bathing or spawning sector. Compressed-gas diving is allowed from one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset, except that diving is prohibited from 22:00 to 05:00.
At Starnberger See, use a listed public entry and remain clear of shipping lanes, landing stages, harbors, buoy fields, private structures, water-ski areas, and mapped wildlife zones. Surface markers do not create right of way.
Monitor weather and the Starnberger storm lights. About 40 flashes per minute means caution; about 90 means danger and an immediate return to shore. After diving, avoid rapid ascent to higher mountain roads or cable-car elevations until the chosen decompression guidance permits it.
For loss of consciousness, breathing difficulty, neurological symptoms, severe cold injury, suspected arterial gas embolism, or decompression illness, call 112, provide 100 percent oxygen if trained and available, protect the casualty from heat loss, and follow dispatch instructions. The reviewed sources do not establish a public 24-hour hyperbaric chamber on either lakeshore. Emergency services should coordinate the receiving hospital and any chamber transfer.
Klinikum Starnberg has a central emergency department for general urgent care. HBO Zentrum Muenchen provides diving-medicine and hyperbaric expertise during its published hours, but it is not a substitute for 112. DAN Europe offers 24-hour diving-emergency assistance. Record dive profiles, gases, symptoms, first-aid times, and the exact shore location for the medical team.
Cold water and thermoclines
Sunshine at the surface does not predict temperature at depth. Use proven exposure protection, cold-water regulators, conservative run time, and a warm post-dive plan; end the activity before shivering or dexterity loss.
Walls exceed recreational limits
Galerie, Pioniertafel, Allmannshausen, and both lake basins continue much deeper than a sport profile. Pre-set depth alarms, maintain horizontal trim, and turn before narcosis, gas stress, darkness, or task loading erodes control.
Exact-date and mapped closures
Legal access changes by shore sector. The official Walchensee regulation and Starnberger district map take precedence over old blogs, memorized local habits, or a marker visible at the roadside.
Hydropower structures at Walchensee
Keep at least 20 m from the Niedernach outlet, 30 m from the Obernach structure, and 50 m from the Urfeld intake, as specified by the Walchensee regulation. Currents and suction make these engineering zones fundamentally different from ordinary shore water.
Walchensee rules prohibit deliberate fish disturbance, damaging or removing submerged plants, excavating, leaving equipment or waste, and interfering with fishing gear. Archaeological finds must remain in place and be reported. Use established access and a tarp to protect shore vegetation.
At Starnberger See, avoid reeds, shallow spawning habitat, marked protection areas, and wintering-bird concentrations. Regional conservation guidance recommends public vegetation-free entries, at least 100 m from reed beds, and at least 300 m from bird groups. The district's fish and waterbird closures are legal planning constraints, not optional wildlife etiquette.
Across both lakes, minimize silt contact, use controlled buoyancy, remove no objects, secure lines and markers, and leave the shore cleaner than found.
