Dive safety

Most dives are drifts. Agree on entry, depth, and separation plans. Carry and know how to deploy an SMB. Stay neutrally buoyant in swim-throughs and avoid overheads unless trained. Winter winds can force port closures; follow your operator's call.

Cozumel has hyperbaric facilities and private hospitals. International Hospital Cozumel operates an SSS network chamber, and Costamed Cozumel offers 24-hour emergency care. Divers should carry DAN or equivalent coverage and a credit card for deposits.

Snorkel and freedive safety

  • Port closures from Nortes

Winter cold fronts can close the port to small boats for safety. Keep a buffer day in itineraries.

  • Strong currents and downcurrents

Advanced northern sites and wall edges may have powerful flows. Stay with your guide and carry an SMB.

  • Sun and sunscreen restrictions

Regular sunscreen is restricted in the park. Use UPF clothing and apply mineral-only products well before water entry.

  • Sea lice season

Thimble jelly larvae can cause irritation in late spring. Wear a full rashguard and rinse after swimming.

Wildlife and protected areas

Follow park rules: no gloves, no touching, no feeding, no fishing or collecting, no anchoring. Use UPF clothing instead of sunscreen. Hire authorized boats and guides only. Report damaged buoys or illegal activity to your operator or park staff.

Do Not Do This

Avoid entering when port closures from nortes. Confirm local briefings before committing.
