Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is the most practical air gateway, roughly 106 km by road from Cala Gonone and about 1 hour 30 minutes by car in normal conditions. Cagliari and Alghero are credible backups when fares or schedules are materially better, but each usually requires about 3 hours of driving.
Travelers bringing a car from mainland Italy can use ferries serving Olbia or other northern Sardinian ports, then continue by road. A rental car or pre-arranged transfer is the most reliable solution for dive luggage, Dorgali, trailheads, and changing boat times. Public buses exist but may require connections through Nuoro or other hubs and should be checked against the current ARST timetable.
Cala Gonone is walkable around the harbor, waterfront, dive centers, and central accommodation. A car becomes valuable for Dorgali, supermarkets, inland restaurants, archaeology, airport transfers, trailheads, and weather-day alternatives.
