Current-swept reefs, quiet lagoon days and a practical Koror base.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers sourced from research and local operating patterns.
February to April is the clearest drier-weather planning window in the reviewed climate evidence. It is not a guarantee of flat water: northeast winds and ocean swell can still affect boat routes. Trips remain possible in other months, with west/southwest monsoon episodes particularly relevant in July-September. Choose a flexible itinerary and judge each outing by the actual forecast and operator assessment. No reliable monthly visibility, crowd or price series was established. This recommendation follows Palau climate research and the 2022 regional report, reviewed 2026-10-28.
Yes, when the booking is specifically for instruction or an appropriate easier dive. Splash advertises introductory and Open Water courses, and some lagoon sites offer a different challenge from exposed corners. A beginner should not assume Blue Corner or Ulong will be suitable because they appear on a package itinerary. Ulong's own site guidance warns about strong and reversing currents. Tell the operator your certification, recent experience and comfort level, and agree an assessment or refresher plus a realistic alternative route. Daily visitor access was not independently confirmed as of 2026-10-28. CRRF's latest reviewed monitoring, dated 2026-10-13, reports more than 100,000 golden jellyfish with a favorable short-term forecast, but that measures ecology. A tour-company announcement also does not establish government admission on your date. Confirm opening with the authorized operator and Koror authorities before making the lake a fixed plan or buying the inclusive permit. Keep the visit to surface snorkeling; scuba is prohibited, and other marine lakes are not alternatives. Sources checked 2026-10-28: CRRF: Jellyfish Lake Conditions and Forecast; Koror State Rangers / PVA: Other marine lakes restriction.
Current PVA and Splash guidance lists a USD 50 Rock Island permit and a USD 100 Jellyfish Lake permit that includes Rock Islands access, each for five days. The state-linked legacy fact sheet still says ten days, and the latest enacted amendment was not located. Confirm start-day counting, activity coverage and any child, upgrade or refund rules before purchase. The national USD 100 environmental fee normally collected in inbound airfare is separate. Permits do not themselves establish private-site permission or daily lake admission. Palau Infinity Dive advertises a PADI Freediver course in Koror, generally described as two days with theory, confined-water and open-water work. Actual instructors, dates, permitted session locations, equipment sizes and rescue support were not confirmed. Secure those details before building a trip around the course. A scuba site or snorkeling stop is not automatically a legal, supported depth-training venue. Always use a competent dedicated buddy, and separate scuba from freediving according to training guidance. No current local competition calendar was verified. Sometimes, but confirm the specific operator and itinerary. Splash publishes a boat-rider/snorkeler option, which is evidence of an offer rather than a guarantee for every departure. Ask whether a surface guide is provided, where swimmers enter, how much snorkeling time they get and whether the sites suit their ability. Deep walls, current-sensitive corners and busy channels may be poor matches. For mixed groups, a dedicated Rock Islands snorkel day or separate outings can be more satisfying than forcing everyone onto one route. Choose a Koror or Malakal hotel with day boats if your group wants different activities, rest days and time in town. Choose a liveaboard when repeated diving and the vessel's routine are central to the trip. Both formats are supported by current products serving Blue Corner, German Channel and Ulong. Compare actual sailing dates, experience requirements, permits, equipment and cancellation terms before deciding. A wider cruise may also visit places beyond this guide; check its route rather than assuming all Palau cruises follow the same plan. Arrive at Roman Tmetuchl International Airport, ROR, and use a prearranged road transfer. The airport publishes a 20-30 minute drive to Koror city and explicitly says no cabs wait at the terminal. Your exact hotel or Malakal dock may take a different time. Send the flight number and landing date to the hotel or operator and confirm the meeting point, luggage and any late-arrival charge. Airline route listings do not confirm a particular flight, so coordinate a fixed liveaboard departure only after checking the bookable itinerary. Start with BCBP's current rules for your passport, including validity, support and onward arrangements. Its February 2026 pre-clearance notice affects twelve listed countries, so an older summary naming only two is incomplete. The live entry form requires a QR submission within 72 hours before departure, while the airport page says before arrival. The separate five-day pre-clearance process also requests that QR, leaving sequencing unclear. Affected travelers should obtain clarification from Immigration and their airline rather than inventing a workaround. Keep the QR available offline. Belau National Hospital in Meyuns has an officially listed emergency room at +680 488-2558, with 24-hour access stated by Palau government guidance. The local emergency number is 911. After activating local care, contact DAN at +1 919-684-9111 for diving-medical coordination. PVA describes a chamber, but current staffing and immediate readiness were not verified, and no separate chamber hotline is supplied here. Check boat oxygen, communications and evacuation arrangements before diving. Serious symptoms need urgent assessment, not another dive or an unannounced trip to a chamber. Build a land day around Belau National Museum, Etpison Museum and Palau Aquarium, or arrange an authorized open-bay kayak or scenic Rock Islands outing. These are real alternatives to waiting aboard a scuba boat. Check openings before setting out: the aquarium currently publishes weekday hours and weekend/holiday closure, and Etpison's own pages disagree about hours. Belau National Museum does not currently promise free pickup. Private resort beaches also need confirmed access. Allow extra time for transport, showers and a relaxed meal instead of treating every stop as a fixed appointment. Do not treat Chandelier Cave or a wreck interior as an ordinary add-on. An overhead prevents a direct ascent even when there is an air pocket, visible light or a commercial tour offer. This guide recommends open-water reef routes and qualification-appropriate wreck exteriors. Helmet Wreck and Iro Maru also involve depth, silt, fragile structure and historical ammunition. Leave objects untouched. Any overhead dive requires the relevant specialist training, equipment and a separate plan; a general Open Water card does not establish that competence. Bring some USD even if you plan to use cards. Koror has banking facilities, but individual ATM availability and foreign-card compatibility are not guaranteed. A current Bank of Guam notice flags its branch ATM as deposits-only and directs withdrawals elsewhere, including Malakal. Palau uses 110/120V, 60Hz power and Type A/B plugs according to the reviewed ITU/Palau practical guidance. Check your charger label and bring the appropriate plug adapter; it does not convert voltage. Tipping is optional in PVA guidance, so there is no universal mandatory percentage. For a first mixed-activity visit, a week is a useful editorial starting point, not a minimum requirement. It leaves room for arrival, several water days, a separate lagoon or cultural outing and time ashore before flying. A shorter stay can work but gives fewer chances to rearrange a weather-sensitive trip. Match the plan to real flight dates and permit validity rather than assuming every requested site runs daily. After repetitive scuba diving, DAN recommends at least 18 hours before flying for asymptomatic divers; allow longer where your profile or guidance requires it. Check the actual sunscreen ingredients against Palau's rules; a reef-safe label is not enough. The March 2020 regulations expanded the prohibited list beyond the original ten ingredients, and current PVA guidance favors compliant mineral formulations. Sun-protective clothing reduces the amount needed. In the water, avoid contact with coral and wildlife, leave wreck objects in place and remove your litter. Only use authorized landings. Do not enter another marine lake if Jellyfish Lake is unavailable: Koror's published enforcement notice expressly restricts those lakes.
