The easiest international gateways are Berlin Brandenburg and Hamburg, followed by rail or rental car. Rostock-Laage is geographically closer but has a limited, date-specific flight schedule and should not be assumed to offer a useful connection. Trains serve Rostock, Warnemünde, Stralsund, Bergen auf Rügen, and Binz, but dive gear and northern island ports often make a car valuable. For a split trip, arrive through Berlin or Hamburg, begin in Rostock/Warnemünde or Rügen according to the boat forecast, and allow at least half a day for the move between hubs. Drivers reach Rügen by the Stralsund bridges; no sea crossing is required.
Rostock and Warnemünde are well connected by S-Bahn, tram, regional rail, bus, and the Warnow ferry. Overnight visitors who pay Rostock's current visitor tax receive a GuestCard that includes much of the Verkehrsverbund Warnow network, with stated exclusions such as ferries and bicycle carriage.
