What It Feels Like
Semporna gives you a rare two-for-one: Sipadan's advanced wall dives and pelagic action, plus Mabul and Kapalai's beginner-friendly reefs and macro hunting. Many travelers base in Semporna town for flexibility, while island stays like Sipadan-Mabul Resort, Borneo Divers Mabul Resort, or the Seaventures Dive Rig make early departures and dusk dives easy. Typical water temperature is around 27°C to 29°C, with visibility often reported near 30 m on good days, but it can drop after heavy rain or wind. Treat Sipadan as the headline act and fill the rest of the week with Mabul and Kapalai so every day is worth the boat ride.

Operator Checklist
- Sipadan permits
- Sipadan permits are issued by Sabah Parks through registered operators. Sabah Parks notes bookings can be handled via the Sabah Parks Head Office (Kota Kinabalu) or the Park Office in Semporna.
- Sabah Parks states operators may book up to six months in advance, with a 50% deposit and full payment due two weeks before the dive date.
- Expect a rotation system. A longer stay (5 to 7 dive days) usually improves your odds of a Sipadan day.
- Daily rhythm
Conditions Fallback
- Listen for briefing details on maximum depth, maximum time, and site-specific current behavior.
Avoid
- No touching, no feeding, no collecting. Keep fins up on sandy slopes so you do not silt out a macro scene.
