Scuba
What It Feels Like
Tahiti gives divers fast, land-based access to the Society Islands' underwater range: shallow lagoon wrecks, coral gardens, turtle sites, deep drop-offs, and shark-heavy drift dives. Operators around Marina Taina, Faa'a, Papeete, Arue, Paea, and Tahiti Iti run local day boats, training, and guided dives for all levels. Water is warm year-round, visibility can be excellent, and most recreational profiles sit between 9 m and 25 m, with deeper options for trained divers.
Signature Sites
Start Here
Tahiti's signature shark drift near the airport, usually around {{ 15 | distance:m }} to {{ 25 | distance:m }}, with blacktip, whitetip, grey, nurse, and lemon shark potential plus jacks and barracuda.
A westcoast reef known for underwater freshwater springs, coral garden scenery, turtles, barracuda, eagle rays, and whitetip reef sharks near the Sapinus surf zone.
A dramatic wall and rift profile that showcases Tahiti's volcanic structure, with turtle and reef fish encounters along a more vertiginous dropoff.
Advanced
A beginnerfriendly lagoon site with tropical fish, coral patches, and wreck structure in roughly {{ 2 | distance:m }} to {{ 13 | distance:m }}, suitable for checkout dives and guided snorkelers.
One of the few wreck clusters in Polynesia, with the Catalina seaplane around {{ 20 | distance:m }} and the Orohena schooner nearby on a warm lagoon bottom.
Planning Playbook
Operator Checklist
- Book early morning dives for the cleanest surface conditions, especially for Vallee Blanche and deeper ocean profiles. Bring certification cards, proof of recent diving if requested, and your own computer. Most centers can rent full kits, and tanks and weights are usually included in guided dive pricing. Plan conservative no-fly time before international departures from PPT. During whale season, scuba divers may hear songs underwater, but whale observation and swimming are snorkeling or freediving activities under separate rules.
