Coralligenous walls, island caves, and storied wrecks across Sicily's wild western edge
The destination's main risks come from depth, current, overhead environments, boat traffic, exposed crossings, and summer heat. The Egadi MPA's rules are operational safety controls as well as conservation measures: use approved sites, authorized centers, small guided groups, moorings, and wildlife-distance rules. Carry appropriate dive-accident insurance and know that Trapani has an official hyperbaric unit.
Published Egadi rules prohibit solo diving and diving without first-aid-qualified assistance. Night dives in submerged caves are prohibited. Zone A access is guide-controlled, and site, group, route, and time limits can apply. Follow the authorized center's briefing even when it is more conservative than a general site description.
The Kent is a deep wreck, and several Marettimo walls, canyons, caves, and passages combine current with depth or overhead. Certifications do not replace recent experience. Use suitable gas, redundant planning where required, a computer, delayed surface marker buoy, and a disciplined lost-buddy and lost-line plan. Freedivers must use trained in-water supervision and visible surface support.
Summer boat traffic is intense around famous coves. Autumn and winter can bring rough seas, port closures, and trip cancellations. Protect flight connections, hydrate aggressively, and stop exposed hiking or diving when local crews or authorities advise against it.
Call local emergency services first for immediate danger, provide the vessel or shore position clearly, and administer oxygen according to training. Preserve computer data, profiles, gases, symptom timeline, and buddy details.
Weather-sensitive island transfers
Marettimo is particularly exposed. Wind and swell can cancel ferries, shorten excursions, or force dive-site substitutions. Do not rely on a same-day island connection to an early flight.
Current, depth, and overhead do not combine kindly
Several Marettimo walls, passes, caves, and the deep Kent require more than basic certification. Stay within training, maintain gas reserves, and accept a conservative guide decision.
Boat traffic at famous coves
Use a visible float or vest, avoid ferry and excursion approaches, and never assume swimmers are obvious to skippers. Freedivers need dedicated surface supervision.
Heat and limited water on trails
Zingaro, Punta Troia, quarry roads, and exposed bike loops can become punishing in midsummer. Carry water, start early, and follow current closure or route notices.
At the designated Cala Martina sites, special protection applies from August 1 through December 31 under the published rules. Groups are limited, guided access does not begin before 10:00, divers must stay at least 15 m from rays resting on sand, and flash, video lights, feeding, and pursuit are prohibited. The encounter is wildlife observation, not a guaranteed attraction.
