The site is reached by boat on outer-reef day trips, so a local dive operator is typically required.
Flynn Reef - Coral Gardens is a boat-access dive site on the outer reef east of Green Island off the Cairns coast. It is described as a straightforward reef dive with vibrant coral areas and generally easy navigation. Divers come here for clear water and the chance of seeing larger reef visitors as well as sharks. Plan it as an outer-reef trip where conditions are usually friendly, but boat access and open-water exposure still matter.
Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Depth Note
Published source text describes the site as having shallow-to-medium reef structure, but no reliable numeric depth range is confirmed here.
Best Season
Year-round; cooler, drier winter months are described as offering comfortable conditions and often the best visibility.
Typical Conditions
Generally easy to navigate with consistently good visibility and an outer-reef setting.
Site conditions, restrictions, and access requirements.
Site Conditions
Safety Notes
Treat this as an open-water boat dive rather than a sheltered shore site. Divers should be comfortable with outer-reef conditions and follow the operator's briefing for entry, ascent, and surface signalling.
Access Restrictions
Boat access only. Site use depends on reef-trip logistics and weather conditions.
Legal Notes
No special legal restrictions were identified in the provided text.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
Best suited to relaxed outer-reef scuba diving with time to explore coral areas and look for pelagic fish and sharks. The site is described as easy to navigate, which should suit divers comfortable with boat diving.
Freediving
Freediving may be possible where trip operators allow it, but the site is primarily described as a scuba boat dive. Open-water exposure and boat logistics should be considered before planning breath-hold diving.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling may be suitable in calmer conditions because the reef is described as accessible and visually rich, but it remains an outer-reef boat site. Follow crew guidance on currents, boat movement, and safe surface areas.
Chill / Non-diver
Not a dedicated chill site; it is mainly a dive-trip destination rather than a general swim or beach stop.
