Mill Cove Wharf Beach Side is a straightforward wharf-and-ramp shore dive with an easy entry and a shallow rock-wall profile that works well for training. The route follows the ramp and wharf, where silty harbour water and debris make buoyancy control more important than distance. Off-season dives are calmer, while summer boat traffic and marina use make timing and surface awareness more important. Sea stars, crabs, nudibranchs, and the odd lobster are the usual draw.

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
1.5m - 24.8m
Depth Note
The beach starts shallow and silted, then the ramp and wharf route fall off progressively into much deeper harbour water.
Best Season
Late fall through winter
Typical Conditions
Silty harbour water with tide-dependent depth changes; buoyancy control matters.
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Stay tight to your buddy, avoid the wharf openings, and expect visibility to drop fast if you stir the bottom.
Access Restrictions
Use the public boat launch ramp next to the wharf and stay clear of the working marina and underwater wharf breaks.
Legal Notes
Halifax Harbour harvesting of bivalve shellfish is banned.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
A straightforward training dive that rewards buoyancy practice and deliberate navigation along the wharf and rock wall.
Freediving
Not a primary freediving spot because marina traffic, silt, and structure make controlled scuba-style pacing a better fit.
Snorkeling
Short surface looks are possible near the ramp, but this is mainly a scuba site with marina hazards.
