Elephant Point

Kelp-covered Tawharanui reef with boulders and current-sensitive edges.

Usually visited by boat around Tawharanui; best on settled days because easterly swell, southerly wind, and current away from the rocks can change the dive quickly.

About Elephant Point

Elephant Point is a rocky Tawharanui reef with kelp-covered slopes, large boulders, and shaded faces that hold more colour and life than the exposed outer surfaces. Divers come here for temperate-reef structure, a mix of reef fish and crayfish habitat, and a site profile that changes noticeably as you move away from the headland. It is better treated as a conditions-dependent coastal reef than an all-weather local default, with comfort shaped by swell, wind, and current around the point.
