Fairchild Reef is a broad kelp-covered reef system near Leigh in the outer Hauraki Gulf, offering varied terrain through gutters, holes, and undercut rock faces draped in kelp fronds. It sits in the intermediate category because conditions demand planning rather than raw skill: visibility is frequently poor, boat traffic builds through summer, and the site is best approached on a settled day with no wind or easterly swell. The reef draws regular visitors for its crayfish activity in ledges and its summer kingfish aggregations, both of which come and go with season and water clarity. Divers picking their entry window and managing depth across the shallow-to-low-twenties range will find the structure rewarding.
