Local operators such as Akumal Dive Center and The Dive Shop Mexico run short-ride reef trips and can bundle afternoon cenote dives when conditions and training line up.
Start by picking a coast: the Mexican Caribbean is the easiest for short trips and first-time divers, Baja is best when you want marine mammals and seasonal variety, and Revillagigedo is a dedicated expedition. If you travel in hurricane season (roughly June to November), keep a flexible plan and consider cenotes as a weather-proof backup activity near Tulum. Budget for protected-area entrance fees, which operators usually collect, especially in CONANP parks.
November - April (Caribbean) and August - November (Sea of Cortez)
Expect current-driven drift dives in Cozumel, boat entries and surge on exposed Pacific sites, and thermoclines in Baja. Offshore trips to Revillagigedo are remote, with stronger currents and deeper blue-water profiles. Cenotes add an overhead environment where buoyancy control and guideline discipline matter, and some routes require formal cavern or cave training.
Huatulco delivers boat diving in and around a national park setting: compact rides from Santa Cruz Marina to rocky reefs, coral communities, and sandy patches where turtles, rays, and macro life show up on the same dive. Most operators run relaxed two-tank mornings, which pairs well with topside Oaxaca adventures.
Easy logistics, warm water, and a mix of reef art, gardens, and approachable wrecks make Cancun ideal for newer divers while keeping veterans engaged. MUSA's galleries at Manchones and Punta Nizuc combine sculpture with coral growth, Puerto Morelos adds relaxed reefs and the C-56 wreck, and Cozumel day trips provide high-viz drifts.
Cozumel is pure drift-diving joy. Walls like Santa Rosa and Palancar drop into blue with giant sponges and swim-throughs, while shallow second tanks at Colombia glow in sunlight.
Isla Mujeres delivers warm, colorful reef diving with the bonus of MUSA sculptures at Manchones. Most diving is boat-based and often run as 2-tank mornings with operators like Pocna Dive Center and Mexico Divers, mixing shallow reef time with optional drift sites when conditions cooperate.
La Paz is a high-payoff dive base for the Sea of Cortez: playful sea lions at Los Islotes, advanced seamount action at El Bajo Sea Mounts, and surprisingly photogenic wrecks like Fang Ming Wreck and C-59 Wreck. Expect boat diving, variable visibility, and seasonal temperature swings, with some sites offering current and blue-water conditions.
Los Cabos is Baja diving with range. In the same trip you can dive high-relief granite reefs at Land's End, photograph schooling fish at Pelican Rock, and road-trip to Cabo Pulmo National Park for coral heads and dense biomass.
Reefs here feel timeless. On good-weather days, boats cross to Banco Chinchorro for clear water, huge sponges, and spur-and-groove gardens.
Drift along Caribbean reefs, hop a quick ferry to Cozumel's famous walls, and schedule a cenote cavern day between ocean dives. Winter bull shark encounters run just offshore with reputable operators such as Pro Dive International.
Puerto Morelos delivers quick access to a protected national-park reef with beginner-friendly profiles and enough variety to keep experienced divers busy. Most dives are short boat rides to coral gardens and sand channels in 6 m to 18 m, while selected sites add deeper structure and stronger current.
Base in a full-service beach city, then day-boat to Los Arcos, Islas Marietas, and offshore pinnacles like El Morro. You get caves, tunnels, rocky reefs, and even a local artificial reef wreck, with winter whale season and summer warm-water visibility making the calendar surprisingly dynamic.
Socorro is one of the world's most reliable places for calm, close encounters with big pelagics. Diving revolves around cleaning stations and pinnacles where giant manta rays loop overhead, dolphins cruise through the group, and sharks patrol the edges of the blue.
