Cold-water walls, wrecks, puffins and seals on Wales' wild Atlantic edge
Pembrokeshire requires a conservative UK cold-water mindset. Offshore sites combine strong tidal flow, deep water close to shore, overfalls, down-currents, cold exposure and changing visibility. Use local skippers for Skomer, carry a functioning DSMB, maintain adequate gas reserves and preserve a clear pickup plan. In a diving emergency at sea, call the Coastguard on VHF Channel 16 or 999, provide oxygen and contact the British Hyperbaric Association helpline. Conservation is operational, not decorative: obey MCZ byelaws, anchoring limits and Marine Code separation around seals and seabirds.
The Sounds and west side of Skomer can run extremely hard on spring tides. Local eddies mean published slack times are only an estimate. Do not dive Jack Sound in an unsuitable stream, and do not enter an exposed site without a boat crew prepared for the planned drift and exit. The MV Lucy begins around advanced recreational depth and drops beyond 40 m, so the team needs appropriate certification, gas, redundancy and decompression discipline.
Carry a conspicuous DSMB on boat dives and an SMB where required for shore activity. Fog, rain and swell can hide a diver from the boat even in daylight. At Martin's Haven, remain near the sides of the inlet, keep clear of the landing stage and never surface beside or under a passenger vessel.
Use exposure protection that remains functional after a delayed pickup. Check drysuit inflator, dump, neck and wrist seals before travel. End the dive for uncontrolled shivering, loss of dexterity, confusion, persistent vertigo or a failed DSMB deployment rather than attempting to rescue the schedule.
Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest has a round-the-clock emergency department, but there is no recompression facility at Skomer or Martin's Haven. A suspected decompression illness or arterial gas embolism should be coordinated through the Coastguard at sea or 999 on land, followed by the British Hyperbaric Association National Diving Accident Helpline. Give the highest-concentration oxygen available through a suitable mask, keep the casualty lying down and comfortable, rehydrate only if fully conscious and not nauseated, and preserve computer profiles and dive details. Do not self-drive a deteriorating casualty to a chamber.
Severe tidal streams and overfalls
Jack Sound, Little Sound, Garland Stone and the west side of Skomer can develop powerful currents, overfalls and local down-currents. Predicted slack is guidance, not permission to enter.
Passenger-boat traffic at Martin's Haven
The shore entry shares water with Skomer passenger operations. Stay clear of the landing stage, use a conspicuous surface marker and never surface beside, behind or below a vessel.
Cold water and rapid cooling
Even summer water is cool enough to impair dexterity and judgment. Use appropriate exposure protection, end the session before shivering and carry dry windproof layers for the boat ride.
Atlantic swell and abrupt cancellation
A fine forecast does not guarantee safe water around exposed headlands. Boat, island and wildlife operators may cancel or switch routes on the day.
Diving is allowed, but removing, damaging, killing or disturbing protected wildlife is restricted. Mobile fishing gear is prohibited, scallop rules apply and anchoring is limited to approved parts of North Haven and South Haven. Within 100 m of shore, vessels should keep to the MCZ limit of approximately 9 km/h. Use established moorings and never anchor over eelgrass, sea fans or sensitive reef.
Around seals, become alert at roughly 100 m and normally remain at least 50 m away unless an animal chooses to approach. Back off if seals stare, raise their heads, enter the water or repeatedly change position. Avoid pupping coves completely. Keep water users and boats away from seabird rafts and nesting cliffs, follow seasonal access maps, stay on Skomer paths and report entanglement or disturbance rather than intervening without training.
