Coral to kelp: plan one coast, then add a contrast region
Pick an activity mode to compare signature sites, skill fit, and gear planning notes before you lock your trip.
Australia lets you choose your own adventure: coral gardens and reef walls on the Great Barrier Reef, whale sharks and manta rays on the west coast, and kelp-and-wreck diving in the temperate south. Most travelers focus on one coast, but the country is perfect for a "reef plus contrast" plan, like north Queensland plus Western Australia, or the Great Barrier Reef plus southern cold-water wildlife.
If you want the classic reef scale, start with Cairns or Port Douglas. For big-animal seasons and reef-from-shore convenience, head to Ningaloo Reef (Exmouth and Coral Bay). For dramatic temperate diving, build time around Sydney, Port Lincoln and Neptune Islands, and Tasman Peninsula (Eaglehawk Neck).
Cairns and the northern Great Barrier Reef
High operator density and liveaboard options from Cairns, with access to outer reefs and coral walls.
Port Douglas and the Ribbon Reefs
A relaxed base at Port Douglas that still reaches reef systems well offshore, often with slightly less bustle than Cairns.
Whitsunday Islands
Combine sailing and reef time in the Whitsunday Islands, with easy addons for nondivers.
Ningaloo Reef (Exmouth and Coral Bay)
Worldclass reef access straight from the beach and seasonal megafauna around Ningaloo Reef (Exmouth and Coral Bay).
Broome and Rowley Shoals
Expeditionstyle liveaboards to the clearwater atolls of Broome and Rowley Shoals, best for divers who can be flexible with weather.
Port Lincoln and Neptune Islands
Biganimal focus in Port Lincoln and Neptune Islands, including regulated cagediving experiences and offshore reefs.
Townsville and central GBR wreck country
Townsville is a practical gateway for central reef trips and bigticket wreck and wildlife excursions when conditions line up.
Sydney and the temperate east coast
Yearround diving out of Sydney, with wrecks and reefs that reward good timing around swell and visibility.
