Season planner for Maldives
Maldives planning is about wind and plankton, not cold water. Expect 27°C to 30°C year-round, then choose between two "moods":
- December to April: drier weather, calmer seas, and the clearest water for diving and snorkeling.
- May to November: windier and wetter, sometimes lower visibility, but stronger plankton cycles that can supercharge manta and whale shark activity in the right places.
A key local trick is to follow the sheltered side of an atoll. Operators often swap between east and west reef lines to keep conditions comfortable.

Activity Drilldowns
OverallJanuary - April·Crowd:High·Cost:Premium
Ideal: Drier weather, lighter winds around 15.0 kph to 25.0 kph, clearest water
Plan Carefully: Southwest monsoon, more wind 25.0 kph to 35.0 kph, choppier crossings, plankton-rich water
The Maldives is not a "closed season" destination, but the experience shifts.
ScubaDecember - April·Crowd:Moderate·Cost:Premium
Ideal: Best visibility 20 m to 30 m, calmer seas for liveaboards
Plan Carefully: More wind and surface chop, visibility often 10 m to 20 m, great manta feeding potential
Diving is yearround, but plan your focus: For the easiest conditions and photographers chasing blue water, favor the drier season and the Central Atolls around North Male Atoll and Ari Atoll.
FreediveJanuary - April·Crowd:Low·Cost:Premium
Ideal: Flatter lagoons, clearer water, comfortable sessions in 28°C water
Plan Carefully: More wind chop, choose sheltered lagoons and conservative depths
For trainingfocused trips, prioritize calm surface conditions and reliable visibility.
SnorkelJanuary - April (clarity) & July - October (manta peak in the north)·Crowd:High·Cost:Premium
Ideal: Clearer house reefs, calmer lagoons, visibility often 15 m to 30 m
Plan Carefully: Windier seas, but prime time for manta-focused snorkeling in [Baa Atoll](/destinations/baa-atoll-maldives)
Snorkel success is less about the month and more about the island's reef access.
TopsideDecember - April·Crowd:High·Cost:Premium
Ideal: Sunniest stretch, calmer seas, best beach days
Plan Carefully: More rain and wind, 25.0 kph to 35.0 kph, great for surf and dramatic skies
If you are coming primarily for beaches, calm lagoons, and seaplane views, the dry season is the safest bet.
