Season planner for Maldives

Maldives planning is about wind and plankton, not cold water. Expect 27°C to 30°C year-round, then choose between two "moods":

  • December to April: drier weather, calmer seas, and the clearest water for diving and snorkeling.
  • May to November: windier and wetter, sometimes lower visibility, but stronger plankton cycles that can supercharge manta and whale shark activity in the right places.

A key local trick is to follow the sheltered side of an atoll. Operators often swap between east and west reef lines to keep conditions comfortable.

Ideal: Best visibility 20 m to 30 m, calmer seas for liveaboards

Plan Carefully: More wind and surface chop, visibility often 10 m to 20 m, great manta feeding potential

Diving is yearround, but plan your focus: For the easiest conditions and photographers chasing blue water, favor the drier season and the Central Atolls around North Male Atoll and Ari Atoll.
